Hotel review

The check-in experience sets the tone immediately: a diffuser bar where you pick your own scent to take to your room, alongside a make-your-own coffee, tea and hot chocolate station - exactly what you want after a long day on the mountain or the trail. In summer, thousands of wildflowers dot the property. 

Rustic and unpretentious, tucked into two wooded acres of towering pines, the husband-and-wife-run lodge is easy to settle into. Rooms, suites and private cabins come with plush king beds and river rock gas fireplaces. Toiletries are refillable William Roam products, coffee is freshly roasted from nearby Sonoma County, and organic wines and rotating beers from South Lake Brewing Company are on tap. The outdoor hot tub, fenced and private, is the place to be after a day outside. 

Lake Tahoe spans five counties and two states, and the lodge puts you within strolling distance of the shore in summer. The free Lake Link shuttle keeps cars off the road (and lets you sample plenty of local beer) year-round. For winter visits, the Heavenly Mountain ski shuttle stops right outside, five minutes to first chair.
