In a quiet street just a short walk from the main square in Pollença you can glide into the understated elegance of Can Auli, the latest addition to IT Mallorca’s collection of luxurious 5 star hotels. This wonderful 17th century building is truly a gem in Pollença, and provides an oasis of calm from which to escape the hustle and bustle of the old town.
The core of the property — a graceful, cool and spacious reception area under a magnificent stone arch — is complemented by a fabulous wall installation by local artist, Jaume Roig. Smaller versions of this are found throughout the hotel. Huge sofas, exposed stone walls, graceful arches and beautiful textiles in terracotta, sage and cream create a relaxing area to chill in. This interior also provides stylish and private areas in which to take breakfast and evening meals. The reception area links seamlessly to the inner courtyard, and the elegant pool surrounded by lavender and herbs. The aroma wafting up from the open plan Mallorcan kitchen is too tantalising to resist.
The hotel has 21 rooms, including the fabulous Can Auli Suite, which boasts lovely views over the old town and the mountains beyond from its private terrace. All are spacious with stone flooring, sisal rugs and lovely understated linens. The heavenly beds make it very difficult to leave.
Breakfast is delightful. A glorious buffet is laid out for tables inside and out. Special orders for eggs, many types of cured meats, Mallorcan sobrasada, freshly made quiches, lovely cakes and different breads — the caramelised banana with nasturtiums was a highlight! Attention to detail is second to none at this understated hotel, from the organically sourced produce to the cycling garage equipped with bike racks, a workshop and cleaning facilities. Nothing is too much trouble for the graceful stylish staff and nice touches include a list of recommended places to have lunch in Pollença and the Port. All in all it's a stand-out, relaxed, adult-only haven in the heart of Pollença.
