“An Austrian Alpine luxury retreat with exceptional family facilities, including a dedicated spa for children, and jaw-dropping mountain views. Highlights include the locally-sourcing dining and service that goes the extra mile.”

Hotel review

Boasting spectacular views of the Austrian Alps, Naturhotel Forsthofgut has to be one of the most family friendly luxury resorts around. Set an hour's drive from Salzburg in the village of Leogang, the hotel is a destination in itself and you'll find it hard to leave.

Days are spent soaking up the abundance of modern wellness facilities, including an impressive family spa which has a staggering four saunas and steam room for over ten-year-olds, as well as a heated indoor and outdoor pool, slides and splash pool. Plus nothing beats paddle boarding on the natural pond while soaking up those Instagram-famous views.

Children are also kept entertained with supervised kids' club activities, two games rooms and the miniGUT farm where you can feed the animals, go horse riding or try a wholesome Alpaca trek, and burn off energy on the endless outdoor play equipment.

The hotel does a great job of blending traditional Alpine architecture with contemporary luxury, and countless floor to ceiling windows showcase the breathtaking views. Rooms cater well to families with features like separate bunk-bed rooms for the kids, cots and baby change tables.

Retreat to the adult-only spa for some peace, which includes another serene outdoor pool, 'textile-free' (no clothing, just a towel) saunas, yoga studio and gym. Plus, large relaxation spaces, where you can cosy up with a blanket and soak up forest audio. Or why not pop to The Botanist Bar to sip on a perfectly-crafted herby cocktail?

The food is a highlight - locally-sourced within 30 miles of the hotel and plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. There's a complimentary 'afternoon snack' (like a late lunch) and a fantastic evening and breakfast buffet, plus adults can order from a 5-course à la carte menu at dinner too. Or avoid the busy buffet by dining at one of three additional restaurants for a surcharge, including Mizumi, where you can tuck into sushi overlooking the natural pond and mountains.

Visit in winter and you can ski directly to the hotel, with the ski lift just a five-minute walk away (the hotel provides one-day complimentary lift passes all year round). Finally, service is relaxed but efficient, and many staff members go above and beyond to make your stay special.

Naturhotel Forsthofgut

Never a dull moment at this compact but busy, family-owned resort hotel surrounded by Leogang mountains. A winter skiing and a summer activity programme combines with a large adult-only spa area and lots of family-focussed facilities. Half board rates apply and there’s a big emphasis on eco and local.
