Hotel Review

The city has plenty of big and flashy hotels but few independently owned places with character and style. DeBrett is a shining example of the latter. The handsome, Victorian building is punchily furnished with a mix of art deco and vintage pieces. Public spaces retain the original wood panelling - the cocktail bar is a classic of its kind - handsomely complimented by big art-deco wall-lights and glossy mirrors. Bedrooms are quietly glamorous with mirrored art-deco-style wardrobes, and a mix of vintage and retro furnishings that might include Ercol armchairs, '60s white pedestal tables and velvet sofas. Colours are bold, as are the striped carpets, while bathrooms are big and jazzy in black-and-white polka-dot tiling. Loft suites are the romantic choice with mezzanine bedrooms. The open-kitchen dining-room has a decent continental breakfast and a short modern-bistro menu in the evening. Views aren't great but it's quiet and in a good location: just off the main drag, Queen Street, and five minutes to the waterfront.

What is there to do in the area?
Here are our suggested ‘Must Do’s’ whilst visiting….

Moments from the hotel’s doorstep, guests can paddle from Auckland’s bustling shores to picturesque Motukorea Island, one of the best-preserved volcanoes in the Auckland Volcanic Field. Private boats and sea kayaks are the only means of access to this untouched island. Once there, kayakers can enjoy a light picnic before hiking to the island’s summit, to take in the breath-taking panoramic views.

Nature lovers looking to get up close and personal during their stay, can discover the beauty and nature of Tawharanui Regional Park in daytime and at night with a boutique tour. Explore the habitat of Kiwi and threatened birds, stunning white sandy beaches and native coastal forest.

Just 30 minutes from downtown Auckland by high-speed catamaran, guests can take a day trip to Waiheke Island, home to over 30 wineries and vineyards all nestled into a picturesque landscape. Join a guided tour for tastings of award-winning wines and relax over a delicious vineyard lunch. Beautiful beaches are in abundance, for those looking to enjoy a dip in the sheltered waters, before returning to the city in time for dinner.
