Hotel Review

On first impressions, this place looks unlikely - a simple coaching inn in a lonely spot, some 20 minutes from anywhere of consequence. But appearances can be deceiving. Step inside to a warm, country pub with a modern style - colourful rugs, slate floors, exposed-stone walls and a comfy mix of tweedy armchairs and simple wooden tables. Together with wood-burning stoves, the overall effect is stylish but relaxed. The nine bedrooms, some in converted outbuildings, are similarly country-contemporary; unfussy but inviting and with smart bathrooms. The real draw here is the food; joint head chefs, Jake and Cassie White, came direct from head chef and sous chef positions at Marcus Wareing's eponymous two-Michelin-star restaurant in London's Berkeley hotel. Their food is inventive, flavour-driven yet unfussy; most people go for the tasting menu which is a delightful surprise. And breakfast is more or less what you want, when you want, taken in the conservatory while gazing to the hills of Scotland - the border is just half a mile away. Simple walks, stunning food, inviting bedrooms.
