Hotel Review

“Be prepared for the explosion of colour that greets all that enter this funky boutique hotel. As the name Salut Maroc suggests, the message is: hello to everything Moroccan, albeit in a very vibrant, contemporary way, from the zellije tiling and intricately carved and painted woodwork to the murals and flamboyantly upholstered beds and chairs. British-born owner Helen Howard, the creative force behind the interior, bought the 18th century former Jewish merchant’s home and over 5 years converted it into a fine example of skilled Moroccan artisanal craftsmanship. Blasting the space with colour and pattern, Helen juxtaposed printed mismatched textiles with bold backdrops. Each of the 11 individually and uniquely decorated rooms represent a different Moroccan city or region. Take ocean-inspired Mogador suite with its green and aqua hues reflecting the colours of the sea. Bathrooms have copper bathtubs and old fashioned throne-like loo seats. There’s a Mondrian-esque salon on the ground floor and rooftop restaurant where guests can dine on freshly caught fish overlooking the ramparts of the Medina with the Atlantic crashing beyond.”

Salut Maroc, Essaouira, Morocco

Salut Maroc is a flamboyant hotel in the most colourful city in the country. Housed in an 18th-century former merchant's house with sensational ocean views, its raison d’etre is a passion for traditional Moroccan zellije – hand-cut tiles – which grace the floor and walls of every room in technicolour splendour.
