Renowned though it may be for its buzzing nightlife and never-ending parties, Ibiza offers a great deal more than first meets the eye. Go beyond the clubs and throbbing party scene and you’ll find clean sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs and white-washed villages. Plus some of the best places to stay in Ibiza are some of the best you'll find in the whole Med.
Ibiza is an island of contrasts – of colours, sounds, sights and atmosphere. Yes, there are the modern resorts, but amongst the best places to stay in Ibiza there are also delightful rural agroturismi, homely fincas and acres of unspoilt countryside.
While the resorts may be a non-stop burr of noise, you’re never far from peace and quiet, where the silence is disturbed only by waves lapping the shore and the gentle chirping of crickets. Even the capital, Ibiza Town, is a place of contrasts with the old and new neighbourhoods side by side.
Gone are the days when La Isla Blanca was just for the young; there’s a healthy mix of ages now, and the island has something for everyone – the chance to get away from it all, adapt to the local pace of life and seek utter relaxation.
Dubbed (alongside its little neighbour Formentera) the Islas Pitiusas - the islands of the pine trees - by the Greeks; this moniker still rings true today, with much of the island clothed in not just pine trees, but olive groves and many other species too.
There is much to explore away from the tourist hotspots: there are miles of coastal trails to be tackled on foot or bike, with plenty of tiny hidden coves to check out on the way.
A good portion of the best places to stay in Ibiza can be found in rural spots - there are plenty of hidden gems, tucked off the beaten track. Our favourites are:
Ibiza town is a prime example of the island's contrast of old and new. The old town has been a World Heritage Site since 1999 and is well worth a visit. It is still protected by the walls the Phoenicians erected in the 1500s to keep out the Turkish pirates.
It boasts mediaeval mansions, a cathedral and castle and a handful of the best places to stay in Ibiza including:
Ibiza's image as party central my still ring true in some of the larger resorts, but step away from these places and the island is a great destination for a family holiday. The locals are renowned for their hospitality, and the gentle pace of life is perfect for those with younger children in tow. For the best places to stay in Ibiza that are child friendly check out:
The obvious answer to this would be hit the beach, but that would short change all the other activities on offer. However if a beach is what you're after then we'd suggest you seek out Cala Llentrisca, a quiet cove that is often deserted or for those who like to people watch try Las Salinas at Playa d'en Bossa where the celebs often hang out.
Don't forget to take in the original HIppy Market at Es Canar or its main competitor at Las Dalias. You might not be able to pick up a bargain these days, but the laid back vibe is still very much there!
If you prefer your retail therapy to be shop based, there is also plenty on offer from designer outlets and boutiques to the usual chain store suspects.
With its stunning coastline and crystal clear turquoise waters, there is plenty for divers or snorkellers. Indeed the sea bed in Las Salinas National Park is another World Heritage site and definitely worth a visit.
