About Colombey Les Deux Eglises

Colombey les Deux Eglises is a commune in the Haute-Marne region of north-eastern France and lies close to the ‘Champagne trail’. The best places to stay in Colombey les deux Eglises make a perfect base for exploring the local area.

The village is most famous as the home of General de Gaulle, the soldier and statesman who was leader of the ‘Free French’ during the second World War. De Gaulle bought a substantial property, ‘La Boisserie’ here in 1934 and very much regarded it as home. The term ‘Colombey’ entered the French political vernacular as a metaphor for someone withdrawing from the fray as de Gaulle would frequently do the same during his times in the doldrums.

There is a 145 foot high Cross of Lorraine in the village, commemorating the wartime efforts of the Free French forces and a memorial museum was opened in 2008 by both Nicolas Sarkozy and Angela Merkel - marking 50 years of Franco-German rapprochement.

This is a very pretty village set in rolling countryside. The Dhuits forest, which surrounds it, is a beautiful place to walk on the many footpaths. There are natural springs and a variety of wildlife, so it's a good spot for anyone who likes outdoor pursuits.
