Search the best hotels in Paris
Paris has been lauded, doted upon, and sung about by so many people that there's little to add. So let's keep it simple: it's incredibly beautiful. It's home to a glorious array of art. Its grand boulevards and their cafe culture offer one of the most pleasurable ways imaginable to while away time. And, as the song implies, there isn't a best time of year to visit Paris, it's a glorious treat every month. The real challenge is deciding on the best places to stay in Paris, because Paris's hotel rating system is famously, and charmingly variable.
Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower and the Champs Elysees are exciting to see but the real charm and memorable delight of a stay in Paris is usually in the details. The people of Paris are every bit as diverting as the grand architecture, whether they are in charming, shruggy, flirtatious, dismissive or garrulous mode. The straight-backed grandmother in a long skirt riding her scooter. The sad-looking dog who crosses the bridge twelve times as you sit there. The participants in the huge Friday night in-line skating event, the Pari-Roller, all shouting and laughing as they thunder past. The Frenchman/woman who gives you the look and puts a spring in your step for the rest of the day. The smell of smoke, the taste of a runny cheese, a coffee strong enough to make you wince....
What not to miss
As with most great cities, the way to see it is to walk everywhere.
A boat trip on the Seine is as touristy as white trainers and a sun hat, but is a lovely way to look at the buildings. It is also a good way to get your bearings when you first arrive.
The famous flea market, Marché aux Puces, is another firm favourite with visitors, but it's great fun and you can find everything from vintage couture to gaudy trinkets to bargain basement trainers.
Don't miss an evening visit to Montmartre where you can stroll the pretty streets below the Sacre-Coeur and soak up the village atmosphere.
Just below Montmartre is Pighalle where you'll find iconic cabaret entertainment in the form of the Moulin Rouge and Crazy Horse - Paris legends!
Venture out of the city centre and spend a day at Versailles - it should be on everyone's bucket list!
As for choosing which area to stay in, everyone has their favourites. The Latin Quarter and neighbouring St Germain des Pres on the left bank, have become increasing popular (some might even say too touristy). But their location alone (easy access to pretty much all the city's highlights) make them a good bet and you can still find charming bars, cafes and much more.
On the other side of the river you'll find the Marais, once rather looked down upon, but now one of the places to stay in Paris, and full of fantastic hotels.
Our Gurus have contributed an eclectic mix of the best places to stay in Paris to our list, with recommendations for a wind range of properties from the cheap and chic Mama Shelter to the opulence of Le Bristol on the Rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré with its three Michelin stars, grand artworks and Paris's only hotel rooftop pool.
For Parisian character
- Parisian charm at its most authentic, L' Hôtel was once Oscar Wilde's bolt-hole in Paris. Louche and decadent in the 60s and 70s, L'Hotel has been flamboyantly re-imagined by Jacques Garcia, and its opulence has been gloriously restored. Think jewel-box rooms and themed suites (if you can bear the tristesse you can sleep in the room in which Oscar Wilde expired beyond his means), and a candlelit plunge pool.
- Hotel d'Aubusson predates Wilde's Paris. It dates back to the 17th Century and features exposed beams, huge double doors and grand proportions. Arranged around a large courtyard, this honey coloured townhouse is romantic, atmospheric and close to the river. And it's been attracting the literati and glitterati since 1690.
- The Hotel Duc de Saint-Simon in St. Germain is plush, romantic, traditional, elegant and intimate - think overstuffed furniture and cleverly conceived paint effects, TVs only on request and room service instead of a mini-bar.
- Hotel San Régis, just off the Champs Elysees is another fine example, with a neoclassical facade and more wondrously decorative wall paper. San Regis has an elegant country house feel in the heart of haute couture. Its popularity with fashionistas proves that traditional elegance and character are always en vogue.

To blow the budget
- The Marquis de la Fayette once lived in the building the Marquis Faubourg St Honore now occupies, just a short walk from the Louvre, Notre Dame and the Opera House. And the refurbishment is elegant and chic, with plenty of museum-grade originals.
- So cool the website is borderline unhelpful, Hôtel Costes has done everything to excess, but somehow lavish haute-bordello style works, and the A-listers love it. Pool, gym, hammam and spa, fine dining, a very lively bar - all achingly hip.
- Fouquet’s Barrière is a collaboration between architect Edouard Francois and Jacques Garcia, aimed at creating a 21st Century French palace on the Champs Elysses. To them that means chocolate coloured leather walls, Tvs encased in sharkskin and sofas in shades of gold. If you're looking for the royal treatment this is your man - or else your personal butler is.
- Hotel Daniel turns its back deliciously on the current trend for all white luxury. Here you'll find Khotan carpets, hand-painted and highly decorative Chinese wallpaper or toile de Jouy, silk sofas in a range of jewel box colours and plenty of handpicked Oriental objets d'art. Great service and all the perks you would expect in this price bracket.
The hippest places to stay in Paris
Here's a few suggestions to start you off, but for a full list of our favourite Paris chic, click here.
- The Hotel de Sers has been converted from the elegant 19th Century mansion built for the Marquis de Sers, and is a prime example of traditional elegance blending with cutting edge design. Located by the Champs Elysees and Arc de Triomphe, the hotel bar, S'Bar is a cocktail hour magnet for locals in the know.
- Le Bellechasse, with its interiors designed by Christian Lacroix, hasn't been around for as long, but its fun, frivolous and unique design and decor give it an effortlessly hip vibe. Quirky and lively, Le Bellechasse is also right by the Musee d'Orsay.
- Hotel des Académies et des Arts has skipped the designers and gone straight to artists for inspiration - Jerome Mesnager has painted his joyous white silhouettes directly onto the walls, and sculptor, Sophie Watrigant lets her ladder climbing figures explore the hotel. The rest of the decor is classy, but not fussy, and the spa and funky detailing, make this a unique Parisian experience with plenty of character.
- Hotel Amour benefits from the hip location and the tres chic kudos of having each room designed by a different celebrity friend of the graffiti artist and nightclub entrepreneur owner. Some are decorated by named artists, some display risqué photographs; all are eclectic, done out in vintage colours with flea market finds.
For under £250 per night
- Hotel Recamier is an elegant haven located in a quiet square close to the Luxembourg Gardens. As well as being well positioned for exploring the city, its rooms are classic, chic and won't break the bank.
- Adele et Jules is a chic Hausmann style property in the Grands Boulevards district that will not break the bank. It offers smart yet homely rooms and family suites, plus there's an honesty bar and complimentary afternoon tea! Doubles start from around €150 per night.
- More affordable younger sibling of Costes, Hotel Bourg Tibourg has an elegantly Moorish feel to it. Handsome and compact, Hotel Bourg Tibourg is another hip hotel in Paris benefitting from interiors designed by Jacques Garcia, but this time they're more 'elegant chic' than 'flamboyant opulence'.
- Hotel Verneuil is a gem of a hotel in a top notch location. Recently refurbished to very high standards, the rooms are stylish throughout, and ambience is homely and welcoming. No restaurant, but plenty of choice close by.
- It's a rarity to find such a good value hotel in such a superb location, but Hotel Thérèse is just five minutes walk from the Louvre. This chic property oozes eclectic style; the only downside being that some of the standard rooms are a little on the small side.
- Villa d'Estrées is a charming, family run, boutique hotel in the heart of the Latin Quarter. Only ten bedrooms, but all are spacious and individually decorated. No restaurant on site, but the family also run a bistro across the road where you can sample traditional French fare.
For travellers on a budget
- In the heart of the Marais, arguably one of the best places to stay in Paris, Le Petit Moulin has been converted from the oldest boulangerie in Paris - this is where Victor Hugo probably bought his baguettes. Cool in itself, what gets this 17 room hotel on the list is that while the facade is original, the interior has been redone by design royalty, Christian Lacroix.
- Mama Shelter by Philippe Starck is probably the largest of Paris's hip hotels, and with its 172-imac-inclusive-mood-lit rooms starting from just £100 a night it's also excellent value. Good value restaurant and bar with table football. Fun fun fun.
For an apartment
- If you've decided that a self catering property would be more suitable for your holiday, then we recommend you visit our online booking partner, booking.com where they have a wide selection for all tastes and budgets.
- Fly to Charles de Gaulle Airport or Paris Orly Airport located just 16 and 12 miles from the city centre respectively. Both are well connected to the city centre by bus, train and taxi.
- Paris is served by seven major train stations with easy links to destinations around France as well as Europe.
- Best time to visit - Paris is a year round destination with activities abound both indoor and out, but in order to best enjoy the outdoor cafe culture and explore the pretty streets plan a trip between May and August where temperatures average around 20°C.
- If you plan to hire a car, we recommend you visit our online partner Rentalcars for the best prices.
