About Massa Lubrense

Massa Lubrense glimmers in romance and ancient mystery. Full of radiant sunshine, lovely secluded beaches and coves swept by the crystal-clear waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, farms producing everything from olive oil and wine to grapefruit and lemonade, and caked in layers of history, this disjointed town of scattered hilltop hamlets facing the sea enchants any visitor. Perhaps that's why it was known as the "Land of the Sirens" in Greco-Roman mythology, notably the place where Odysseus and his sailors were lured by the sweet-song of the sirens - Leranto Bay - the selfsame place he dedicated a temple to the goddess Athena. Indeed, history-buffs will enjoy its close proximity to the ancient city of Pompeii, as well as the beautifully frescoed medieval monasteries, churches and cathedrals. Coupled with that there's so much to explore in terms of land and sea: countless secluded groves and beaches dot the coastline, many of which are lined with excellent restaurants, and you can hire a boat to explore them, kayak or go scubadiving with a local company. All in all, there's so much to see and do, and offers far more to the intrepid holidaymaker than towns like Castellammare di Stabia or indeed Salerno. The best places to stay in Massa Lubrense all face the sea and have near access to beaches - perfect for the romantic holiday of sun, sand and sea that you so crave!

What not to miss

  • Walk around the town - the scattered hamlets are connected by old dusty mule tracks, so it's a place that rewards the walker. You can see both Bays, those of Naples and Salerno!
  • Visit the Ex-Cattedrale, a church built in 1512 but subsequently rebuilt in the 18th century, boasting a beautiful majolica floor.
  • Take a 1h train ride to the ancient city of Pompeii!
  • Find some peace and enchantment in the Monastero di San Paulo, whose intricate frescoed ceilings are the envy of the region...
  • Slum it in the sunshine at one of the many beaches around: there's the Cala di Paulo beach, lined with restaurants, and beaches like that of Crapolla Grove - secluded, pebbled and serene.
  • Book a tour of the nearby Masseria Farm and taste some freshly-made lemonade, wine and fresh produce!
  • Explore underwater caves and reefs with the Punta Campanella Diving Centre.
  • Hire a boat with Lubrense Boats and explore the nearby hidden coves...

It isn't surprising that the Greeks and Romans believed that sirens inhabited these parts: it's an enchanting, mesmerising world of natural beauty, lush hillsides and secluded pebbled coves. Ideal for a romantic break, the best places to stay in Massa Lubrense will sweep you away into a dream.
