About The Aosta Valley

Home to Mont Blanc, the majestic Gran Paradiso National Park, the towering Aiguille des Glaciers, and the formidable Grand Jorasses, Italy’s Aosta Valley offers scenery so spectacular that words hardly do it justice. Several resorts also bask in the shadow of the legendary Matterhorn, further adding to the valley's extraordinary panorama of dramatic peaks. Our Gurus’ selection of the best places to stay in the Aosta Valley showcases a diverse collection of charming guesthouses, pretty converted farmhouses and beautiful contemporary hotels — perfect for couples, friends, families and independent travellers.

The Aosta Valley is a year-round destination, promising a magical ski season from the end of the year until mid-April, when après-ski festivities and twinkling lights create an appealingly warm and welcoming atmosphere. As the snow melts and spring arrives, the Valley is transformed into a fabulous hiking, mountain biking and climbing destination, with countless spots to discover in the pristine wildernesses of Gran Paradiso National Park, Mont Avic Natural Park and beyond. Culture aficionados, on the other hand, will be fascinated by the Roman monuments, Romanesque churches and medieval castles which stud the landscape.

Explore lovely Aosta itself, or hide away in lovely mountain villages with family-owned hotels and eateries, and stacks of charm. Courmayeur, just a tunnel away from Chamonix, delights visitors with its superb ski slopes and sophisticated foodie scene, whilst snow-sure Cervinia guarantees great conditions throughout the season. Champoluc is famed for the variety of its runs, La Thuile provides quieter pistes, and Cogne is perfectly positioned at the foot of the Gran Paradiso massif for keen hikers. Each destination offers its own distinct character, and is home to some of the best places to stay in the Aosta Valley. Choosing just one can prove tricky — all the more reason to return the following year!

The Best Places to Stay in the Aosta Valley

For keen skiers

  • Nira Montana is a luxurious, 55-room chalet hotel, just 400 metres from the ski-lifts of La Thuile. It takes its decorative cues from the alpine scenery, and the result is serene, elegant and extremely comfortable. Each room has a private balcony or terrace, and there's a serene spa with indoor pool. The restaurant specialises in local produce and cuisine — with the addition of Florentine pizzas — and there's a kids club for little ones.
  • La Meridiana du Cadran Solaire is a traditional chalet with 17 individually decorated rooms and suites, a restaurant specialising in alpine cuisine, and a spa. Skiers will be delighted to be close to both the Aosta-Pila Cable Car and Gorraz-Grand Grimod Cable Car for winter days out on the slopes.
  • Hotel Cresta et Duc, just 200 metres from the cable car in Courmayeur, is a great choice for skiers. Rooms range in size and style, and there are plenty of great options for families and groups of friends travelling together. The restaurant's generous fare is great for après-ski evenings!
  • Hotel Village is well-suited to adventurers, who will love the wooden chalets with Nordic design elements. Hop aboard the cable car to the slopes at Pila, or stroll through woods of birch and pine in the summer months. Tranquil, intimate and brilliant for outdoorsy types.

For families or groups

  • Saint Hubertus Resort offers a collection of spacious suites and self-catering apartments in Cervinia. Attractive interiors have cosy sitting rooms, big fireplaces and lovely views. Multiple bedroom units make this a great pick for families or groups. There's a restaurant and champagne bar onsite, too.
  • Milleluci is a wonderful mountain retreat on the outskirts of Aosta. Original interiors with wooden beams and crackling fireplaces promise plenty of charm. Each of the 31 rooms and suites boasts a private balcony with expansive mountain views, and shared facilities include an outdoor pool, spa, gym, and a restaurant specialising in regional cuisine. The children's playground and flexible room options make this a fun family choice.
  • Au Coeur des Neiges promises all the charm of a classic ski chalet. Book a room in the main chalet, or opt for one of the smaller multi-bedroom chalets for a trip with family and friends. The restaurant and lounge are excellent, there's a soothing spa and you're just two minutes from Courmayeur's cable car.
  • Hotel Duca d'Aosta offers 60 stylish guest rooms in Aosta. Inspired by the elegance of the 1950s and '60s, spaces have floors of French oak, stone showers and enamelled steel bathtubs. Some rooms have space for extra beds, there's a big terrace and the location is ideal for families.

For romance

  • Hotel Miramonti is a beautiful spa hotel with carved four-poster beds, gilt frames, marble bathrooms and open fireplaces. Surrounded by parkland and boasting expansive views of Gran Paradiso from private balconies, this is a wonderful spot for romantics. The Roman-era inspired spa is superb, with Finnish and Roman saunas, a tepidarium, hydrofoil, massages, and hot tubs. There are three restaurants, too.
  • Bellevue Hotel and Spa is an elegant, traditional chalet just inside the boundaries of the Gran Paradiso National Park. The 38 rooms and suites feature antique furnishings; the best have sink-into copper bathtubs. The state-of-the-art spa covers an impressive 1200m² including salt and ice caves, and the Michelin-starred Bellevue Restaurant is not to be missed. A couples' favourite.
  • Le Reve Charmant is a quaint old town B&B in Aosta with exposed wooden beams, hand-crafted furnishings and stone details. The best rooms have Turkish baths. Breakfasts are served in the dining room, there's a cosy lounge for unwinding, and the feel is laid-back and romantic.
  • QC Terme Monte Bianco is a chic chalet in a scenic mountain clearing near Courmayeur. The luxury alpine decor has a distinctive contemporary Scandinavian feel, complementing the striking spa and indoor pool. The hotel has two romantic restaurants and is surrounded by landscaped gardens.
  • Aethos Monterosa is an intimate, design-led hideaway near Champoluc. Think exposed wood, clean lines, mid-century furnishings and cosy fireplaces. Romantic couples will adore the chic guest rooms and suites, as well as the sumptuous spa, candlelit dinners and glorious views from private terraces. Very indulgent.

For climbing enthusiasts

  • CampZero Active & Luxury Resort is a fantastic pick for adventurers and keen climbers. Just outside the Monterosa ski resort, this contemporary hotel has an indoor rock climbing wall, as well as an ice wall in winter. There's also an impressive gym and spa, as well as easy access to the slopes. Think crisp modern interiors, a choice of eateries — including a brasserie and fine dining restaurant — and a cool bar.

For alpine luxury

  • Hotel Hermitage in Cervinia sits in a clearing of ancient larch trees at the foot of the Matterhorn. A traditional wood-and-stone exterior, hides beautifully restored interiors offering an opulent contemporary take on chalet style. The spa is sensational — as is the restaurant with its extensive wine list. Very indulgent.
  • Au Charmant Petit Lac is a design-led eco-retreat in the heart of Val d'Ayas. Interiors celebrate alpine simplicity, with pale wood, earthy tones and lots of glass, filling the spaces with light. The solar-powered spa, geothermal heating and sustainable approach to gourmet dining reflect the eco-ethos. Very cool.
  • Principe delle Nevi could be the finest contemporary hotel in Cervinia — and the wider Aosta Valley. This striking reimagining of the traditional chalet sees plenty of exposed stone and toffee-coloured wood, paired with a high-end Scandi sense of design. With just 32 generously proportioned rooms and suites, the hotel has an intimate feel, as well as an impressive spa, gourmet restaurant and chic bar.
  • Mont Blanc Hotel Village has an elegant traditional feel, with exposed beams, imposing fireplaces and lavish textiles. The 40 rooms and suites boast beautiful views — the hotel sits just outside Courmayeur, and is framed by mountains on all sides. There's a heated pool, hot tubs and kitchen gardens outside, as well as a spa and small gym inside. Full of character.

For a wellness retreat

  • Hostellerie de Mascognaz is a charming collection of eight individual chalets housed in converted barns and farm buildings near Champoluc. Expect charming original features and a real sense of tranquil escapism. Highlights include the indoor pool and hammam, along with yoga classes and guided hiking excursions. Very special and wellness-focused.

For great value

  • Albergo Grandes Murailles in Valtournenche is ideal for keen skiers on a budget. Near to the ski lifts and to the bus to Cervinia, the albergo has 15 traditional rooms and suites, some of which are large enough for families. Open fires are ideal for cosy evenings, and the restaurant offers hearty buffet breakfasts.
  • The Bouton d'Or is a simple chalet in Courmayeur with 35 rooms and suites in an excellent range of shapes and sizes, ideal for accommodating families or groups. Useful bonus facilities include a shuttle to the Dolonne piste, a spa and sauna, private balconies or gardens for each room, and generous breakfasts.
  • Maison Colombot is a charming little guesthouse with just six rooms. Set in Aosta's town centre, this is a great choice for on foot explorers. Decorated in caramel colours, cosy rooms have small balconies, and there's an inviting breakfast room and restaurant. Lovely for families or groups, and very affordable.

  • If you'd prefer a self-catering option, we suggest that you visit our online partner Booking.com.

Travel information

  • Fly to Turin Airport, a little over an hour by car or three hours by public transport from the Aosta Valley, or to Milan Malpensa or Geneva Airport, both a little over two hours away by road. The Aosta Valley is also within easy reach by train of Paris, Lyon, Geneva, Turin and Basel, amongst other European hubs. Many hotels will be happy to organise a station or airport pick-up in advance.
  • If you want to hire a car, we recommend you visit our online partner, Rentalcars.
  • The Aosta Valley ski season runs between mid-December and mid-April. The rule usually holds that the higher-altitude resorts are the most snow-sure. Summers are warm, with temperatures edging towards 30°C, so spring and autumn are best for hiking and mountain biking in slightly cooler conditions.
