Texan capital Austin is known for being laid-back and creative - and possibly even a little bit ‘hippy’, in the friendly, colourful, artistic kind of way - plus it also has the reputation for being the ‘Live Music Capital of the World’. But Austin isn’t all music and ‘Keep Austin Weird’ bumper stickers. Austin has a rich history - it was founded in 1839, along with the Republic of Texas - and occupies a beautiful position, centre state, with abundant natural resources. If you’re coming for one of the big music festivals then you’ll need to book a long way in advance if you want to put up in one of the best places to stay in Austin. But there’s plenty of live music going on here every night of the year.
Our Guru’s list recommends properties across town, but if you’re here for the music then the best places to stay can be found in the Downtown area. This is also where you’ll find the coral pink granite State Capitol building, a key local landmark, and many of Austin’s varied museums and galleries.
What Not To Miss
- The Texas State Capitol, constructed in its unusual red granite, was completed in the late 19th century. It is surrounded by 22 acres of grounds which are home to a collection of statues and monuments.
- The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum features everything: ranging from a re-imagining of Texas during Native Indian times, to exhibits about the Wild West in Hollywood and country music.
- Or try The Thinkery, a museum designed to inspire young minds with its hands-on exhibits unpicking ideas within the fields of science, technology and the arts.
- Downtown Austin is where you’ll find several excellent art museums. And of course many restaurants, bars and music venues.
- Barton Springs is a famed local natural swimming pool in Zilker Park, a vast haven of shady green, run through with biking and hiking trails.
- Zilker Park is also where you’ll find the Zilker Botanical Gardens, spreading for 30 lush acres beside the Colorado River and is a lovely, cool place to stroll.
- If you’re interested in the local flora then head out to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Centre.
Where To Stay - Which Neighbourhood?
- Downtown Austin features a plethora of bars, clubs, and live music venues - boasting a wonderfully buzzy-yet-laidback atmosphere.
- East Downtown is a hipster, slightly grittier version of its more central counterpart. The district oozes character: with murals a-plenty and worn-down, slightly weathered bars.
- South Congress is located directly to the south of Downtown and is where the locals go to party. It's awash with independent and vintage shops, plus there's a wide range of cafes and some of the city's best restaurants.
- Travis Heights, aka South River City, is full of leafy green spaces interspersed with hip cafes and colourful bungalows. It's the ideal spot if you fancy a more relaxed vibe during your stay.
- Judge's Hill is primarily residential, so if you're looking to return from busy days sightseeing to enjoy a bit of peace and quiet then it's the place for you.
Our Guru's pick of the best places to stay in Austin range from budget boutique to luxurious guest house - something for every taste and budget.
