About Pompeii

Modern Pompeii has become a sort of satellite town of Naples, but no one is coming for that, we’re all fascinated by ancient Pompeii, ruined dramatically by the eruption of Vesuvius as described by Pliny, and now one of the world’s most interesting archaeological sites. If you’re looking for a base to explore the whole area, Pompeii is a good choice, and when it comes to the best places to stay in Pompeii, our Gurus like an elegant B&B and a small classical style hotel converted from a noble villa.

Pompeii wasn’t really destroyed, it was covered under fragments of burning pumice stone, so it’s all there, preserved underneath; ruins of the Roman streets, the baths, the temples, houses and amphitheatre, plus around two thousand people who were unlucky enough to be living there in 79AD. One of the wonders of Pompeii is that it’s such a huge site and around a third of is still un-excavated, so there are more treasures to be unearthed. Pompeii’s size also means that it's a good idea to invest in a good guidebook or else the audio guide to ensure you get the most out of your explorations — there aren’t that many signs! One of the great advantages of the best places to stay in Pompeii is that staying here gives you plenty of time to explore the site properly. Because it really is worth a lot more than just a day trip.

Contemporary Pompei has just the one ‘i’, and mainly exists to provide hospitality to visitors to historic Pompeii. Around two and a half million visitors visit Pompeii every year, so the best places to stay in Pompeii, and Pompei, are regularly full. As well as hotels, restaurants, bars, cafes and shops, Pompei has a beautiful, 80 metre high bell tower, which you can take a lift to the top of for incredible views of both cities, Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples. Pompei also has a famous shrine, The Shrine to Our Lady of Pompei, which is famed for its miracles.

The Best Places to Stay in Pompeii

For The Ruined City

  • The Villa Silvana is a charmingly traditional hotel converted from a beautiful, noble villa and surrounding gardens. There are only four rooms, classically styled with frescoes on the walls and period furniture. But it’s the location, at the foot of Mt. Vesuvius, which is what really matters, because you’re within a very pleasant stroll of Pompeii.

Best B&Bs

  • The Casa di Plinio is an elegant B&B, located about as close as you can be to the ruins of Pompeii. There are just three traditional rooms, with brick walls and exposed wooden beams, wrought iron beds and some nice antiques. They do a hearty breakfast each morning served in the dining room or outside on the terrace.

If you’re starting out in Naples, not at the airport, you can catch the Circumvesuviana train, which runs between Naples and Sorrento, and leaves about every 30 minutes, or you can catch the National Rail train which alights at the station in the town of Pompeii, which is about 700 metres from the entrance to the ruins.

  • The Naples and Amalfi Coast tourist season traditionally begins at Easter, and runs through until the first week of November. The warmest summer months are the busiest time for visitors, but if you’re not restricted on when you travel, and you’re interested in seeing this region’s historic treasures, as well as its beautiful beaches, then it might be more enjoyable to visit between April and mid-June, or September through mid-October? Even during winter Pompeii still gets close to eight hours of sunshine a day, so you can really visit at any time of year, as there are always plenty of places open to serve local people.
