About Cefalù

Cefalù, one of Sicily’s most enchanting coastal gems, blends medieval charm, golden beaches, and sweeping sea views beneath the dramatic Rocca di Cefalù. While its historic centre offers cosy B&Bs, intimate guesthouses, and character-packed boutique stays perfect for romantics, just outside town you’ll find sleek resorts with pools and panoramic terraces ideal for families or luxury seekers. For laid-back beach escapes, head towards Mazzaforno Bay, where stylish contemporary hotels meet crystal-clear waters and an irresistible holiday vibe.

Whether you’re here for the beaches, the food, a bit of history, or just to soak up that laid-back Sicilian atmosphere, there is something here for everyone. It’s an easy hop from Palermo, with the northern coastline stretching out in a string of golden beaches perfect for swimming, snorkelling, or diving. Offshore can be just as stunning as the postcard views on land, and the waterfront promenade, dotted with fishing boats, cafes, and trattorias, makes it hard to resist lingering until sunset.

But Cefalù isn’t just about sea and sand — its history is woven right into the landscape. Climb the rocky backdrop to discover the fifth-century Temple of Diana, a Norman castle, and a ninth-century Arabian cistern, all with sweeping views of the coast. Down below, the Arab-Norman Il Duomo, dating back to 858AD, dominates the heart of town with its intricate decoration and commanding presence. It’s a place that rewards both wandering and pausing.

Travel Information

  • Cefalù’s closest international airport is Palermo Airport; it’s about an hour away by road, or an hour and a half on the train. Catania Airport might offer better connections to some travellers, both Palermo Airport and Catania Airport are used by both flag-carrier and low-cost airlines, but not necessarily the same ones. Catania Airport is about two hours away by road, or just under four by public transport.
  • If you want to hire a car, we recommend you visit our online partner, Rentalcars.
  • If you’re coming to Cefalù to relax on a sunny beach in the summer, and you’re thinking July and August would be perfect, you’re not wrong, but you’re also among many travellers with the same idea. July and August are properly hot in Cefalù, and the Mediterranean beaches and beach resorts are busy, and can be expensive. Visitors tail off in September, though the sea is still warm and pleasant. October is a good option if you’re planning to visit the museums and palaces, and admire the architecture, and we recommend September and October, and April and May, as the best times to visit for a walking holiday.
