About Madonna di Campiglio

Known for its spectacular spot in the Dolomites, Madonna di Campiglio has been a holiday destination since the second half of the 19th century. Walking and winter sports were popular here when Franz Joseph I, the Habsburg Emperor, holidayed in Madonna di Campiglio, and his patronage added to a glamour that the resort still promises to modern-day visitors. Today the quality of the skiing, and the huge snow park, are draws too, but the best places to stay in Madonna di Campiglio still have a regal quality that set them, and their little resort town, apart from the other centres within the Val di Sole ski area. Our recommendations include luxury spa hotels, properties with michelin starred dining and chic options right in the centre of town.

Madonna di Campiglio is nestled into a valley between the Brenta Dolomite range and the Adamello and Presanella glaciers, and though a valley spot may sound low, the town is still at 1550 metres, with the skiable slopes rising to 2,600 metres. The background of pretty much any photo you take here, looking in any direction, is going to be spectacular, so if you’re looking for glamorous après-ski in an incredible setting, the best places to stay in Madonna di Campiglio are definitely for you. The Habsburg visitors are commemorated each year with the Habsburg Carnival, held in late February. The celebrations include costumed parents and fireworks displays, and this is definitely the best time to visit Madonna di Campiglio if you want to see the town in its full grandeur.

Beyond its looks, Madonna di Campiglio has substance too, around 150kms worth of slopes, linked by 57 ski lifts, plus a 50,000 square meter snow park, and around 40kms of cross country ski trails. The resort offers runs for all abilities, plus winter hiking, snow-shoeing and ice skating. Our Gurus recommend the best places to stay in Madonna di Campiglio for families too; the nursery slopes are well positioned, and close to some long blue runs. Come the summer months it makes a fabulous destination for any keen walkers, bikers and climbers.

The Best Places to Stay in Madonna di Campiglio

For Skiers

  • The Boutique Hotel Diana is a charming chalet style hotel, with a fairytale tower, plenty of blonde wood inside and out, and an extensive spa and 27 individually designed rooms and suites. When it comes to practical facilities, it's hard to look beyond the property's spa facilities and superb restaurant.

For Families

  • The Hotel Chalet del Sogno is another charming chalet built from local stone and plenty of blonde wood. Its 18 rooms and suites are very spacious (family suites can easily accommodate up to 4 or 5), with plenty of pine detailing, and private balconies. The restaurant offers hearty, family-friendly fare in a welcoming atmosphere— ideal for groups as well as families, and there’s an excellent spa with a pool and sauna. Just 25 metres from the piste.
  • Just outside Madonna di Campiglio’s centre, the Maribel Hotel is a beautiful, newly-built chalet hotel, with 24 well designed rooms and suites offering traditional alpine charm, but with a contemporary edge that incorporates huge windows and lots of light into the design. Families will love the spacious accommodation (separate bunk rooms for the kids in family rooms), great food and wellness area with indoor pool. In the summer months the hotel will help you out with horse riding and cycling trips.

For Foodies

  • The Biohotel Hermitage is of a similar size, with 25 rooms and suites, and also a shuttle bus ride from town and from the nearest ski lift. Also a chalet in style, this hotel has some of the best views around, overlooking a wooded valley with peaks and glaciers beyond. All of the rooms have huge windows, with balconies and terraces. The restaurant has a Michelin star, and a fantastic wine list, while still managing to be family-friendly. Skiers will appreciate the impressive après-ski spa and food offering.

For Romantics

  • The DV Boutique Hotel is our pick for style: a 20 room boutique hotel with carefully designed rooms featuring plenty of wood, leather and hides, plus an excellent spa and restaurant. Our Gurus appreciate the cosy bar, and favour rooms with private balconies with wonderful views, plus private saunas and wood stoves. It’s romantic, but family-friendly too.

For a Spa Break

  • Large and luxurious, the Lefay Resort & Spa Dolomiti is the sort of place we think the Habsburg’s would want to stay in today! Secluded within a wooded valley, but with spectacular views from the huge windows of its 88 rooms and suites, this is a luxurious place to appreciate the majesty of the Dolomites. The spa is included in the name, and is as luxurious and impressive as that accolade suggests, with a long treatment menu and beautifully designed facilities. The views from the hotel pool are really something, and the restaurant champions local flavours and seasonal ingredients.

Travel Information

  • Madonna di Campiglio’s closest international airport is Verona Villafranca Airport, which is about two hours drive away, or about three and a half hours by train. Milan Bergamo Airport is next closest, around two and a half hours away by car, or about four hours on public transport. Venice’s Marco Polo Airport, is another half an hour away by car, so about three hours, or about five hours away by train. Because Madonna di Campiglio is so close to the border, Austria’s Innsbruck Airport is also worth considering — it’s just under three hours away by car, or about five hours by train.
  • If you’re thinking about hiring a car we recommend checking what our online partners, Rentalcars have to offer.
  • Madonna di Campiglio’s ski season runs between mid-December and mid-April, depending on the weather, but visitors can usually expect the best snowfall in January and February. There’s a lot of terrain covered by the local ski fields, with peaks up to 2,600m, and even when there’s not snow lower down the slopes, the alpine backdrop is spectacular. During the summer season — roughly between June and August — this area is much-loved by hikers, bikers and climbers, appreciating the 50,000 hectares of the Adamello-Brenta Natural Park, and around 450kms of mountain trails. Even in summer you’ll need to bring layers, because the temperature can really drop overnight. February’s Habsburg Carnival is the time to visit if you’re looking for optimum glamour.
