About San Gimignano

Perched on a Tuscan hilltop with jaw-dropping views, San Gimignano is a UNESCO-listed gem known for its medieval towers, rich heritage, and romantic charm. It’s compact and atmospheric, which means hotels here tend to be boutique-style conversions—think elegant palazzos or cozy townhouses right in the historic center. For a more tranquil, countryside feel (and pools!), stay just outside town in beautifully restored villas and farmhouses. Whether you’re after luxury, charm, or family comfort, you’re covered here.

San Gimignano is all charm and atmosphere, with its stunning architecture, centuries-old palaces and churches filled with frescoes, and narrow, winding lanes that beg to be explored. There’s a gelateria so famous it draws crowds as big as any landmark, and the town’s packed with cozy cafes, lively bars, and inviting restaurants—perfect for settling in with an aperitivo as the world strolls past. While many just visit for the day, staying overnight lets you experience the town’s magic without the crowds, especially in the quiet, golden hours of morning and evening—and that’s when it truly shines.

Travel information

  • Florence Airport, Amerigo Vespucci, is 43 miles from San Gimignano, just under an hour in the car. Pisa Airport, which is 51 miles away, might be more useful to some visitors, and is just over an hour in the car.
  • If you plan to hire a car, which we would advise if you want to get out and explore further afield, we recommend you visit our online partner Rentalcars.
  • Like most of Tuscany, San Gimignano is busiest during the summer, but also hottest, though its breezy hilltop position protects it from the 30°C+ heat. But San Gimignano is really popular, and with such a limited accommodation it gets a lot of visitors each day, so if you do visit in the summer try to get here as early in the morning as you can. If you can consider the other seasons do, spring and autumn still get plenty of sunshine and not a lot of rain, and Christmas is a special time in Italy.
