About Tuscany
Tuscany is a must for any visitor to Italy. Though slightly tarnished by the idea of the "chiantishire set", it has so much to offer everyone, from the stunning landscapes, beautiful hilltop villages to the jaw dropping art collections in the Uffizi and the amazing architecture in the cities. Our selection of the best places to stay in Tuscany ranges from hotels in the towns and cities (brilliant choices if you want to walk rather than have to travel to the sights) to properties that are slap bang in the middle of nowhere, with nothing around but the Tuscan countryside and all it has to offer.

Where to stay - which town/region?
- Florence: Tuscany's capital is a bewitchingly beautiful city which oozes medieval splendour. Its narrow, winding cobbled streets - which are littered with quaint cafes and gelaterias - suddenly open up into magnificent plazas which reveal true architectural marvels, such as Il Duomo (the cathedral). A breathtaking spot.
- Siena: Often overshadowed by the imperious Florence, Siena is a magnificent city in itself. The expansive Piazza is home to the annual Palio di Siena, an ancient horse race where riders dressed in extravagently-coloured outfits hare around the track (with spectators standing right in the middle of all this!).
- Montepulciano: This hilltop town is of course best-known for its magnificent wine. Boasting gorgeous architecture and divine views, it's the ideal spot for a laidback retreat.
- Pisa: Or how about Pisa, with its notorious leaning tower and resplendent architecture?
Whilst there may be enormous choice of accommodation in this popular region, it is a good idea to plan well ahead if you want to bag one of the best places to stay in Tuscany during the busy summer months.
The Best Places to stay in Tuscany
For Florence
- For a discreet stay in the heart of the city, in fact on its most fashionable shopping street, book the Antica Torre di Via Tornabuoni. Its 24 rooms are comfortably traditional in style, plus there's an excellent restaurant and fabulous roof terrace with mesmerising views.
- Florence’s Palazzo Niccollini al Duomo is a fabulous property choc-a-block with original features and furniture, in an unbeatable location. Family owned and run, it is a spectacular residence overlooking the Duomo.
- If you love the beauty of Florence's architecture, but prefer something more modern when it comes to your own space, Floroom is for you. The decor in these four rooms is monochrome, splashed with modern art, and you're right in the heart of town, just behind the Ponte Vecchio.
- For a lovely Florentine riverside location the Ferragamo-owned Hotel Lungarno, with its with elegant modern interiors, and views of the Arno, is perfect.
- The Helvetia & Bristol has been the home-from-home choice of the international elite since the 17th Century, with its elegant old-fashioned luxury and charming, classically styled rooms. There’s a Mediterranean restaurant with a view of the Piazza Strozzi.
- Casa Howard is a chic B&B guesthouse converted from a Florentine palazzo. Owned by textile designers, their forte is very much in evidence in all of the individually designed rooms. With fresh flowers everywhere and honesty bars on each floor, it's definitely amongst the best places if you're looking for a home from home feel.
- For a family friendly retreat on the outskirts of town, we recommned the Marignolle Relais & Charme. Here you can expect traditional interiors, plus the added bonus of beautiful gardens complete with swimming pool - a must after a hard day's sightseeing! A relaxed property and ideally located for exploring beyond the city.
For Siena
- The Grand Hotel Continental in Siena also gets our vote. Expect grandiose elegance, the floor to ceiling frescoes in the salon are a sight to behold, plus impeccable service too.
- One of the best hotels in rural Tuscany for art lovers, try the Residenza d'Arte, a rustic, quirky ‘house of art’ surrounded by beautiful countryside just outside Siena.
- Campo Regio Relais is a superb little B&B bang in the centre of Siena. Romantic rooms feature four poster beds and antique furniture, and there's a roof terrace with wonderful views over the town.
For Luxury
If luxury is a must for you, then our list of the best places to stay in Tuscany can certainly deliver.
- First up, what about Il Falconiere? Counted among Tuscany's best hotels, it offers Michelin-starred dining, beautifully furnished rooms and a wonderful location just outside Cortona.
- Villa Bordoni near Greve in Chianti hits the spot too. Stylish, luxurious bedrooms with uninterrupted views of the surrounding area. There are even cookery classes for those who want to recreate something from its excellent restaurant.
- For a stunning converted 13th century castle book the Castello Banfi Il Borgo. Here you'll not only find sumptuous rooms and suites, but also superb food (including fine dining, a taverna and pool side options) and award winning wines from the property's own vast wine estate, not forgetting the breathtaking views...
- If contemporary luxury is more your thing, then we'd recommend La Bandita Townhouse a gorgeous palazzo conversion in the centre of Pienza. Rooms boast original features, but a distinctly modern style and there's a great little restaurant and garden too.
For Romance
- Villa Le Barone is a gorgeous Tuscan villa with spectacular views. Rooms and suites are traditional and romantic with exposed beams, lovely fabrics and antique furniture. Plus there's a heated salt water pool, restaurant, wine tasting and cookery classes. A popular choice for honeymooners!
- If you're looking for romance, accompanied by great food then book the Tenuta San Pietro. Located not far from Lucca, it offers just 10 luxury rooms with oodles of character complemented by modern art. There's an outdoor pool with a view and the restaurant serves gourmet regional and Mediterranean cuisine. For the really keen, there's cookery classes too!
- Locanda dell’Amorosa is a seductive hotel converted from an entire Renaissance hamlet surrounded by rolling countryside,
- A short drive from the coast, Tenuta La Bandita is a charming, 18th Century villa in the Tuscan hills with an excellent traditional restaurant, 55 hectares of gardens and good links to local vineyards.
- Surrounded by vineyards near Chiusi, Il Patriarca has a Michelin-starred restaurant as well as romantic four-poster bedrooms and a pool with dreamy views over the vineyards.
Best Tuscan Escapes
- Vedetta Relais is a chic little country escape with eight individually designed, quirky suites, plus glamping lodges dotted amid the olive groves if you prefer a back to nature vibe. It is set amid 14 hectares and boasts stunning views. In addition there's a lovely pool, bistro for lunch or dinner and you're just 10 minutes from the beach.
- Fontelunga Hotel & Villas is a gorgeous Tuscan villa situated in the countryside not far from Cortona. Here you'll find nine individually designed rooms, plus two chic villas in the grounds (they share their own pool), which are perfect for families or small groups. Great on site facilities including tennis court and pool mean you can happily while away the hours without moving!
- The Hotelito Lupaia has astounding views from its pool, and is a convenient base for Florence, Siena, and Cortona.
- Or, to escape to you own private hamlet, stay at the Borgo San Felice, with panoramic views and lots of activities on offer.
Best B&Bs
- For laid back luxury in B&B form book in to La Bandita where the emphasis is on fulfilling the whims of even the pickiest of guests. The swimming pool has views to die for and if you can't be bothered to go out, there is a gourmet private chef on site!
For Families
- Villa Campestri Olive Oil Resort is a gorgeous country estate in the Tuscan Hills. There's a good range of rooms, suites and apartments (family suites can sleep up to five) and great facilities including outdoor pool, excellent restaurant and art and cookery classes. No one will be bored here!
A Tuscan Agriturismo
At the other end of the scale some of the best places to stay in Tuscany are the little guesthouses and B&Bs that are tucked away, slightly off radar.
- Large families and groups will appreciate the generous sized, but rustic, accommodation at the Agriturismo Poggiacolle near San Gimignano, where some apartments sleep up to ten people.
For Great Value
- The Hotel della Fortezza occupies an historic building, an 11th Century fortress, with commanding views over the surrounding region, and prices start from as little as €59 per night including breakfast in low season.
- Then there’s Casa Palmira, a charmingly rustic B&B beautifully converted from a barn - and just 16kms from Florence. Prices start from €85 per night.
For an Apartment or Villa
- A holiday villa or apartment is often the best option if you're travelling with family or in a group of friends. For a wide range from budget bolthole to chic retreat, we recommend the selection with our online partner Booking.com.
Travel Information
- Pisa Airport is Tuscany’s largest, it’s well served by both the low-cost carriers and the big international airlines. It’s also well connected to most other main towns - except Siena - by a fast train service. Florence’s Amerigo Vespucci international airport is another option, but has more limited connections.
- If you want to hire a car - which we highly recommend if you’re staying in Tuscany - we recommend you visit our online partner Rentalcars.
- Tuscany is large and varied, so it’s difficult to generalise about the best time to visit. But broadly speaking Tuscany is popular, but very hot and very busy, during the summer months - especially August; quieter, and with pleasant weather in spring; stunning in autumn; quite cool and dark, but still beautiful in winter - especially around Christmas.
