About Hereford

Beef and cider will spring into many minds at the mention of Hereford, and for some that’s reason enough to visit. If you’re looking for another few reasons, Hereford is just on the edge of the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and just a touch further from the Brecon Beacons National Park. It’s also neighbours with both Ross-on-Wye and Hay-on-Wye, and during Hay’s annual literary festival the best places to stay in Hereford fill up with book lovers too. The town is also busy during the springtime cider festival. Our favourite hotels are two charming period conversions, one a Victorian home, the other a grander, Regency era one.

If you’re planning to use one of the best places to stay in Hereford as a base for walking trips, you can really take you pick, both our recommendations are conveniently located to get out of town, as well as within walking distance of local restaurants and attractions — like Hereford’s interesting collection of little museums and galleries. There's also the 11th century cathedral, which has a medieval map of the world, a Mappa Mundi; the Hereford Museum and Art Gallery, with its collection of local decorative art; and The Old House, a Tudor building that’s now a Jacobean museum. And obviously the Hereford Cider Museum.

The Best Places to Stay in Hereford

For a Central Location

  • Located right up against the moat of Hereford Castle, and a stone's throw from Hereford Cathedral, it would be hard to book anything more central in Hereford than Castle House. This elegant townhouse hotel has been converted from a lovely Regency era building, with charming, lavender-filled gardens, and pretty views. Inside are 24 rooms and 16 spacious suites, all traditionally decorated, but with comfort in mind. The restaurant menu is fuelled by the owner, a local farmer who supplies the produce, so it’s very local. Perfect for the book festival, or exploring the Wye Valley or the Brecon Beacons.

For Great Value

  • Charades Guest House has been converted from a Victorian home, with an expansive private garden and six very comfortable guest rooms. We like the spaciousness of the rooms, and their abundance of natural light. We also like the dining room and the indulgent breakfasts served there! Within walking distance of numerous great restaurants and all the main sights of Hereford.

If you’re coming into London, Heathrow is the most convenient, around two and a half hours by car or taxi, or three and a half hours by train. If you’re coming from London, but not an airport, leave via Paddington by rail, and you’ll be in Hereford in about three hours.
  • If you want to hire a car we recommend you visit our online partner, Rentalcars.
  • If you’re hoping for nice weather the best time of year to visit Hereford is summer, when it’s sunny, dry and temperatures get into the low 20°Cs. This isn’t a particularly sunny destination, and there’s a chance of rain whenever you travel. Hereford is close enough to Hay-on-Wye to be busy during the annual literary festival, held from the end of May until the beginning of June. And there are regular market days in Hereford and surrounding towns. If you’re planning to visit in winter, do bear in mind that it can be properly cold here!
