About Egypt

Egypt captivates visitors with its extraordinary blend of ancient wonders and natural beauty. Pharaohs, pyramids, rolling sand dunes, the River Nile, and the Red Sea have become the stuff of legend for travellers from across the world — and with good reason. Whether you’re dreaming of sunshine, heritage landmarks, artisanal crafts or cracking cuisine, there’s something for everyone in this fascinating country. Many of the best places to stay in Egypt are indulgent hotels on the banks of the Nile, but our list of top spots also include hip city hotels, understated diving escapes and exceptional desert hideaways.

When it comes to planning your travels, the country can be broadly divided into five areas. Most holidaymakers begin in lively Cairo, before venturing to Luxor and the Nile Valley for ancient archaeological treasures, or to the Siwa Oasis and Western Desert for biblical history and dramatic landscapes. There’s a spectacular coastline to admire around Sinai and the Red Sea, whilst Alexandria has become known for its vibrant youth culture.

No Egyptian adventure is complete without admiring the Pyramids of Giza, the last surviving of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, or jaw-dropping Abu Simbel, St Catherine's Monastery at the foot of Mount Sinai, and some of the 120,000 antiquities housed at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. Keen divers will be fascinated by the Blue Hole - north of Dahab - or Ras Mohammed National Park near otherwise fairly touristy Sharm el Sheikh. A plethora of cheaper package holiday spots still abound around the country’s coastline: it’s well worth doing your research to book a room at one of the best places to stay in Egypt instead.

  • Fly into, among other airports, Cairo International Airport, Borg El Arab Airport (which serves Alexandria), Luxor International Airport, Hurghada International Airport, Sharm El Sheikh International Airport and Marsa Alam International Airport.
  • We'd suggest hiring a car and driver for longer trips across Egypt, unless you're confident driving aboard. Contact our online partner Rentalcars if you would like to hire a car.
  • The weather is at its most appealing between October and April, with temperatures hovering around 20 - 25°C. December and January are peak tourist season, so expect higher prices and crowds at famous sites. The shoulder season (June and September) is far quieter, but temperatures are considerably higher in Cairo. This is a wonderful time to discover the Red Sea, however, when the water is warm and the sun shining.
