Search the best hotels in Kyushu
There is magic in the landscape of Kyushu. Japan's southern and westernmost island, she is by far the most enduringly beautiful: with active volcanoes, near-tropical coastline, rolling green hills and mountainsides carpeted pink with the petals of rhododendrons. There is an enchanting air to the region. Ideal for a hiking holiday or a chance to soak up Japanese culture, Kyushu offers an enormous variety of things to do for the intrepid traveller. Whether you're participating in a traditional tea ceremony, spotting monkeys along the Nichinan Coast, exploring ancient fortresses and temples, hiking in the Kuju Mountains or bathing in the Ibusuki Hot Springs, you will find yourself lost in a different world. The best places to stay in Kyushu will make you want to stay forever!
Kyushu was where it all began for Japan. Excavations near Kagoshima confirm that Jomon culture started spreading north from Japan's southermost island roughly 10,000 years ago. Japan's trade with China also began in Kyushu, highlighting her integral place in Japanese history. One of the luminaries of the Meiji Restoration was from Kyushu - Saigo Takamori - the subject of the film The Last Samurai, but it was during the last century that Kyushu earned a tragic place in history, when Nagasaki became the second victim of the atom bomb.
So, if you're a history lover, Kyushu is the place for you. The region is peppered with 16th century fortresses and ancient temples. Kumamoto Castle, for instance, is considered to be one of Japan's greatest castles, known for the cherry blossom that garlands her battlements. As for temples and shrines, you are spoilt for choice: the Fuki-ji Temple in the Oita prefecture, a national treasure of Japan, was originally built 1300 years ago, and looks beautiful in the autumn when the ground bristles with gold and red leaves. The same can be said of the Takachiho Shrine in Miyazaki.
It is surely the landscape of Kyushu that makes her the envy of Japan. The Kuju Mountains in Oita bloom pink with rhododendrons - a stunning sight to see - and are ideal for hiking while the near-tropical coastline of Nichinan is peopled with monkeys, making for a fascinating (and entertaining) excursion. During autumn, Kyushu's many gardens bloom bright with red and gold leaves and are wonderful to visit. Kiyomizuyama, one of Japan's greatest walking spots, is one such example, but the beautiful garden of Suizen-ji Joju-en is the place to visit for a gentle stroll. Located in the Kumamoto prefecture, her gentle hills and interlinking ponds are the definition of idyllic. Due to the active volcanic activity on the island, Kyushu is home to many hot springs, or "onsen", like that of Ibusuki - a tourist hotspot.
Where to stay - which city/region?
Unless you're in one of Kyushu's bustling urban centres like Fukuoka or Nagasaki, you will find yourself submerged in a different world.
In the townships and villages lying scattered across the lush mountains and gentle green hills, are remnants of feudal Japan still very much alive today. In places like Izumi you can attend tea-making ceremonies while wearing the traditional kimono gown and learn about the ancestral customs of the region. Saga, a small and rustic province, is home to Japan's finest pottery industry, and is well worth checking out. Indeed, many natives of Honshu, on the main island of Japan, find themselves in a different world when in Kyushu: locals speak a curious mix of dialects near-incomprehensible to standard Japanese!
Fukuoka lies at the very end of the bullet train line, and really is off most tourist radars. It's actually closer to Shanghai than it is to Tokyo! But if you're interested in your food, then you must visit this city. It is home to tonkotsu ramen, and the iconic yatai street stalls. Plus there's a wide range of superb fine dining restaurants. It's also a great destination if you want to experience Japanese festivals - the calendar is packed year round with celebrations for all.
Nagasaki may be know to most due to its devastation at the end of WWII, but nowadays it's a thriving port city. But there is loads to do here for both culture vultures and active types. Nagasaki is full of UNESCO sites, plus there's the Peace Park and the unmissable views from the top of Mount Inasa (go up a night and watch the city twinkling in the darkness below).
Kumamoto has a reputation for being extremely friendly. It has lots of beautiful architecture and castles (including Kumamoto Castle, one of Japan's most famous), and the Suizen-ji Joju-en Garden, which dates back to 1636, should not be missed.
Beppu is a town on Kyushu's Eastern coast and it is one of Japan's most famous hot springs resorts, with over a hundred (almost all the ryokans and hotels will provide access to one for their guests). Beppu park is also a great place to come and admire the cherry blossom from March to Mid April.
