The 10 Best Hotels in Edinburgh’s New Town

Far from being the ugly, modern duckling to the original medieval city of Edinburgh, the New Town, like the Old Town, is UNESCO Heritage Listed and rife with wonderfully historic treasures. Built during the Georgian period, its elegant rows of Georgian houses in a sensible grid system, are dotted with green squares and rows of shops. And today it’s the ‘going concerns’ which dominate the area. With Edinburgh’s main shopping just to the north of Princes Street Gardens. Which is also where you’ll find some of the 10 best hotels in Edinburgh’s New Town.

As well as eating, drinking and shopping well in the New Town, and being centrally located for all the charms of Edinburgh during the day and night, if you stay here you’re also close to the National Gallery of Scotland and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. If you’re interested in the history of the New Town then the Georgian House and the Dean Village will definitely be of interest to you. And it’s worth climbing Calton Hill to get the full impact of this wonderful city, built in around and on top of this spot’s rather dramatic topography.

The Glasshouse

The New Town is well connected to the rest of Edinburgh by bus, but it’s only a short walk across North Bridge to the Old Town, with all the highlights of the Royal Mile, including the castle, the Palace of Holyrood, the Grassmarket, St. Giles Cathedral, Mary King’s Close, Gladstone’s Land Greyfriars Kirkyard and plenty of ‘closes’ or alleyways to explore and pubs and restaurants to review your experiences in. And on Chambers Street you’ll find the excellent National Museum of Scotland.
