In the St Emilion region

Chateau de Pitray

  • The fairytale Chateau de Pitray, with its towers, turrets and creeper-clad pale stone walls, is situated about 12km east of St Emilion. It has only four rooms, but each is elegantly designed with plenty of antiques and lovely garden views. Tours of their small surrounding vineyard can be organised by the friendly hosts, plus there's a refreshing pool.
  • Also with a pool, Le Relais Franc Mayne is a substantial sandstone house surrounded by its own vineyards. Bedrooms are elegant and stylish, but in a very understated way. Breakfast is included in the room rate; no restaurant, but plenty of delicious options in the surrounding area.
  • The adults-only Chateau du Palanquey offers just five sophisticated rooms that cleverly mix vintage and contemporary pieces. As well as a small spa and outdoor pool, there's a terrace and garden plus far-reaching views over vineyards.
  • Just 10 minutes from St Emilion, Chateau de Castelneau has only three rooms, so it's perfect for family or group getaways. Rooms feel comfortable and homely, plus there's a tennis court, pool, garden and bikes for hire to keep everyone amused.

In the Margaux region

Chateau Giscours

  • The handsome Chateau Giscours is a classical 19th century property built in pale stone, with terraces and large shuttered windows. The three rooms with their floral fabrics and wooden floors have a country house feel, and there's a beautiful kitchen with plenty of exposed stone, for hearty breakfasts. The hosts offer vineyard tours and cellar tastings.

In the Cotes du Bourg region

Chateau de la Grave

  • Offering good value for money, Chateau de la Grave is a turreted affair dating back to medieval times. Interiors are cool and colonial in style (some bedrooms have exposed stone walls), featuring an effective mix of antiques and more contemporary fabrics. There's also a pool and glorious views over the surrounding vineyards.

In the Graves and Sauternes Regions

La Chartreuse des Eyres

  • For a town-based stay, La Chartreuse des Eyres in Podensac is an excellent value "petit chateau". Interiors are very stylish with stripped wood floors, Farrow and Ball colours and bold modern art. One room is offered as a self-catering apartment.

Chateau Cordeillans Bages

  • Not far from the coast, Chateau Cordeillans Bages is a beautiful 17th century manor house, surrounded by its own vineyards in Pauillac. Bedrooms are bright and contemporary and there's relaxed bistro-style dining.  

Near Bordeaux City

Chateau Leognan

  • Chateau Leognan is a luxurious hotel that combines historic charm and contemporary style, just 30 minutes from Bordeaux.
