Hotel review
The approach to Saltmoore is along a private drive that runs through a grey, wooded ravine. It feels a little isolated rather than welcoming and at the end sits the car park and a large house that feels underwhelming, of course the pouring rain on arrival didn't help! You would never guess the beach lies just ten minutes away, on foot, between Whitby and Sandsend. Saltmoore styles itself a ‘wellness sanctuary’. However, it really is just a hotel with a small spa, nothing out of the ordinary or exceptional here and the interiors certainly fit into the beigification of hotels with no spark or colour anywhere to be found.
As for what sets it apart from other spa hotels trying to be wellness retreats, it's difficult to say. The gym has no treadmill and not much space to stretch and women might find the lack of lower free weights disappointing. The indoor pool is just that, an indoor pool (adults only), with sauna and spa and the changing rooms are light and bright.
We reviewed a 'Divine Room' which is quite small, with a spacious, well-lit tiled bathroom, including a generous supply of Wildsmith products, along with a bath, shower, and flannels (though not a bath mat to step onto?). The underfloor heating in the bedroom is a nice touch when you're padding around barefoot; the beds are big with soft plump pillows, and there's the usual herbal teas, coffee and cafetière.
Additional rooms can be found in The Beach House, which sits around 300 yards along the drive from Saltmoore House. The walk between the two takes about five minutes. The Beach House has an easy, coastal feel, with rooms suited to families and dogs. Interiors are calm and unfussy.
The three dining options are soon to take shape. Fine dining. A brasserie (already in place). A pizza restaurant. Each is set to serve Modern British food. Expect confident, produce-led cooking. The brasserie leans towards classic and generous. Think cod with clam and mussel chowder, Pork belly with black pudding and pomme purée. Breakfast is a highlight, with Yorkshire tea cake, pastries, fresh juices (we loved the kale and mango), and a varied cooked breakfast choice, including goat's cheese shakshuka and Arnold Bennett, with great coffee too!
