Commanding George Street since 1775 and right next to St Andrew’s Square, the location is faultless for experiencing Edinburgh: The New Town, designer shopping on George Street, museums, galleries, Edinburgh Castle, all within walking distance. Made up of five Georgian townhouses, The George exudes the sort of solid confidence that comes from hosting everyone from Robert Burns to modern-day wanderers seeking refuge in Edinburgh's New Town. Recent refurbishment by Intercontinental has done what good hotel renovations should: preserved the architectural bones whilst breathing contemporary life into the rooms and public spaces.
Bedrooms marry period grandeur with modern comforts - Egyptian cotton sheets, Byredo toiletries, and those essential creature comforts like proper WiFi and flatscreen televisions. The suites are particularly generous, some offering separate living areas and city views that remind you why Edinburgh really is worth visiting.
Le Petit Beefbar serves globally inspired fare with an emphasis on excellent beef. Sunday lunch is particularly popular with guests and outsiders, whole families, young lovers, it’s a treat and good value, whilst Burr & Co provides the necessary coffee and pastries for fortifying oneself before tackling the Royal Mile.
Service seems to always come with a smile and earns consistent praise, particularly the restaurant team who demonstrate that rare quality of making every request seem perfectly reasonable. It's the sort of place where historic charm and modern luxury coexist without either overwhelming the other.

'There’s nothing stuffy about Edinburgh’s oldest hotel; it does classy/contemporary on a grand scale throughout. With a hip(ish) coffee shop, bar and brasserie-style restaurant and impressively up-to-date bedrooms and suites, most of what has been lost in old-fashioned character is gained in style.'
