About Ceret

At the foot of the Albera Massif, 30kms west of Perpignan, lies the picturesque town of Céret. Once the capital of Vallespir — an ancient Catalan comarca — the town boasts striking heritage architecture, with terracotta-tiled roofs and narrow cobbled lanes shaded by imposing plane trees. A hotspot for arts and culture buffs, it’s also a laid-back destination for couples, friends and families looking to soak up the sunshine. Small and intimate, the best places to stay in Céret range from self-catering villas to historic B&Bs, full of traditional charm.

Encircled by the remnants of ramparts built to fortify the town, Céret is packed with historic landmarks and lovely walking paths. Cross the 14th-century stone bridge for wonderful views, fill your bags at the Saturday farmers’ market, or take a guided tour of the Chemins Sublimé — showcasing buildings painted by the likes of Matisse, Picasso and Dufy. Beloved by artists, the town was home to both Matisse and Picasso, whose works you’ll find exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art. Other highlights include cherry-picking at the riverside orchards and strolling into the shops and cafés which line the Avenue Michel Aribaud. Venture further afield for hiking, mountian biking, kayaking and horse riding.

The town also has its own bullfighting arena, and the best places to stay in Céret fill up fast during the annual corrida in July. Book well in advance if this is something that you’re keen to experience.
