About Collioure

Visitors to Collioure will quickly understand why this quaint village on the gorgeous Vermillion Coast, set in front of a dramatic mountainous backdrop, has been the subject of so many artistic pieces through the years. Whether it's the historic and colourful waterfront buildings or pleasant coves, there's no shortage of inspiration for painters here (and that includes famous artists such as Matisse and Derain), and it will come as no surprise to visitors that there are numerous galleries in the town featuring some superb collections. Set back from the bustling waterfront with its range of cafes and restaurants are charming narrow, winding streets that offer a different perspective of the town and some of the best places to stay in Collioure are set amongst these streets.

The beauty of Collioure is described as rivalling the best spots of its more well known cousin the Côte d’Azur, but at a fraction of the price and providing a much more tranquil experience for visitors. The surrounding area is a rich tapestry of gastronomic delights, featuring world-renowned vineyards on the steep slopes above the town and excellent seafood - a fantastic way to really immerse yourself into the local culture.

What not to miss:

  • Start by visiting the Musée d'Art Moderne Fonds Péské, although there are no Matisse's there it still gives a rich insight to the town's artistic heritage.

  • To see the artists of today at work head to the streets behind the Place du 18-Juin and to the old Le Mouré neighborhood which are filled with contemporary art studios.

  • Dine in one of the café-terraces overlooking the main beach and be sure to sample Collioure's delectable anchovies.
  • Admire the pink-domed 17th-century church of Notre-Dame-des-Anges previously used both as a place of worship and as a lighthouse.

Things can get busy during the peak months of July and August so to ensure you snag one of the best places to stay in Collioure during those months be sure to book ahead.
