About Guadalajara

Although Guadalajara is Mexico's second largest city, and the capital of Jalisco State, it has been rather overlooked on the tourist trail. However, this is a real shame as the city has a true Mexican authenticism to it while also being calmer than bustling Mexico City. Most importantly this is also home to two of the country's most renowned exports, tequila and mariachi music. Our selection of the best hotels to stay in Guadalajara offer something for all tastes from elegant traditional properties to sleek contemporary stays.

The city has a number of interesting cultural sights from the twin-towered cathedral to the Zapopan district’s imposing stone archway and majestic 17th-century basilica. It is also most-definitely a destination for foodies. The Mercado San Juan de Dios is South America's largest indoor market where local delicacies can be sampled while there is also a thriving culinary scene happening in the restaurants from local taco joints to high-end establishments. Outside the city itself, you'll find beautiful stretches of blue agave fields and the nearby town of Tequila is, of course, a must-visit to sample the produce from the 200-year old distillery. The surrounding countryside is also ideal terrain for a day's trekking.

What not to miss:

  • Soak up the atmosphere of the city during an evening spent listening to mariachi music and drinking tequila.
  • Sample local delicacies at the Mercado San Juan de Dios.
  • Visit the impressive twin-towered cathedral.
  • Take a day trip to Tequila and visit the 200-year old distillery.
  • Spend a day trekking in the surrounding countryside.

A lively city with plenty on offer, we highly recommend a trip here. Browse through our collection of the best places to stay in Guadalajara to start planning your visit.
