Jardi d'Arta looks like a couple of unassuming townhouses from the street, with a little traditional restaurant on the ground floor, but go inside and the building opens up to a beautiful courtyard behind which there’s a tranquil garden and a Moroccan-style pool, then follow the stone steps up and then down on a higgledy piggledy route, and you’ll eventually find the rooftop garden, with its verdant walkways covered in scented climbers and rambling roses, and a patch of grass beside two more pools. Most of it’s 12 rooms have their own private access to the garden, and are well designed with lots of gorgeous original features, but large, contemporary bathrooms. Breakfast is served in the downstairs courtyard or indoor dining area, dinner is served up by the in-house chef, and the bar and piano make for cheery evenings.
For rural intimacy and peace try Son Mas, a spacious and well designed 16 room hotel converted from an elegant manor house, with an excellent spa boasting an impressive list of treatments and a vaulted dining room where they specialise in simple, Mediterranean dishes sourced from the hotel’s own kitchen garden and local producers. Even when it’s full this hotel’s design will make it feel private, with public rooms spread out, two pools, a library and lots of airy indoor/outdoor spaces. Rooms are uncluttered wooden furniture, simple white muslin drapes and separate modern bathrooms with generous baths and power showers.

Cas Comte Petit Hotel & Spa is a luxurious, adults-only escape in the traditional Mallorca town of Lloseta. Converted from an 18th century manor house, the building has been artfully restored and reinvigorated into a 14 room hotel with a pampering spa, a rooftop pool terrace, a sun-trap of a courtyard and an excellent restaurant. If you’re looking for something extra book a suite, they all have enormous hot tub baths and separate walk-in rain showers. This is a grown-up haven in a great spot for exploring the whole island of Mallorca.

Converted from a former townhouse with a very palatial feel about it, Can Alomar is a collection of 16 chic rooms and suites, which are almost large enough to call apartments...If you lived in a beautiful, super slick but historic apartment building with a beautiful roof terrace with a plunge pool! It’s got a buzzy terrace bar which serves food and cocktails and a super friendly concierge service too. Plus it’s in an excellent spot, very close to some of Palma’s most exclusive boutiques.

For a boutique escape

Tucked away in the hills around Valldemossa, half hidden by its own beautiful gardens is the Mirabo de Valldemossa, a discreet, privately owned hotel with just nine rooms. Carefully converted from an olive farm in 2002, this property has been in the same family for five generations. And the feel is understated, but chic: rooms feature bare stone or white washed walls, simple matting on terracotta tiled floors, cream linen furnishings and antique wooden furniture. The views are restorative, as is the simple food served in the dining room — which used to be the olive press. Personal and relaxing.
The Pink Pepper Tree is a tranquil, rustic-looking finca in the hills above Lloseta, close to the Tramuntana mountains. Inside there’s plenty of stylish design choices, with an emphasis on natural materials and clever vintage finds, and its eight rooms have bare stone walls and whitewashed beams, floaty fabrics and freestanding baths. There’s a pool, and a series of terraces, plus a small lounge and bar, which are homely and full of charm.

The Boutique Hotel Calatrava is a sleek, stylish hotel in central Palma de Mallorca, right opposite the beach. On the ground floor is a lovely little cafe-bistro with a wine bar and views out to sea. Then upstairs are just six rooms and suites with plenty of space, wood flooring, exposed beams, big windows with big shutters and a cheerful, but minimal colour palette — some of them perfect for families. The hotel has a small spa too.
In a prime position in Palma's Gothic Quarter, the Summum Prime Boutique Hotel is an elegantly refurbished 18 room hotel with some exceptional details and a lovely rooftop pool terrace. This is a five star hotel, with an excellent restaurant and facilities — there’s a spa and gym, and some of the suites are ideal for families. But what’s extra special about it is the way the minimal, contemporary furniture has been placed with such effect against the ceiling frescos, wood panelling and cornice work.

Best Boutique Fincas on Mallorca

The Son Penya Petit Hotel isn’t calling itself a finca, but it certainly has the look and feel of a ranch, with lots of straight lines to the low-rise architecture and beautiful pale exposed stonework. It’s just outside the village of Sant Llorenç, in a scenic spot, which they make great use of with all the windows, private terraces and open-plan design living space. There are 16 rooms and suites and one villa, which is a great choice for families, plus an excellent spa and a gourmet restaurant.
Just outside the small but charming village of Artá, the Finca S'Estelrica is a somewhat boxy looking farmhouse converted into a nine room hotel. Outside the rural views are a real pleasure, and inside the boxiness has been used as a design influence. There’s a chic, angular aesthetic, with an emphasis on local stone and other natural materials, which also gives it a fresh, clean feel. There’s a small pool, but you’re quite close to the beach too. There’s no restaurant here, but once a week the owner-managers prepare a traditional supper for their guests. Some of their suites are suitable for families.

Es Lligats is an 11 villa agriturismo on an expansive estate outside the village of Sant Llorenç. This is the kind of place where the views and clear skies seem to go on forever. And under them is a collection of impeccably designed buildings which borrow from the local traditional style with their straight lines, exposed stonework and beamed ceilings, but are also elegantly modern, making the most of big windows and cool stone floors. The decor is chic too, making this a sort of uber-stylish home from home for you and your family — and you could accommodate a large one here too if you needed to.

Best Value Boutique Hotels

Can Tem is a little place in medieval Old Town Alcúdia, close to the Roman ruins at Pollenca. Staying in these six simply but traditionally dressed rooms you benefit rom being in the quiet, pedestrianised zone, but you’re within a short walk of a long, sandy beach. Originally the owner’s home they converted the 17th century manor house into a small hotel 15 years ago when their sons moved out, and now run it as a business. The feel is low key and informal. Continental buffet breakfast includes local speciality emsiamada and is served in the dining room or shady courtyard.
Artá’s Hotel Forn Nou, is another six room hotel, but this time also a traditional sort of cafe/bar/restaurant with rooms. The light-filled interiors are rustic-chic, with antique, solid wood furniture, whitewashed walls, exposed beams and four-poster beds dressed with white muslin. The cafe/bar/restaurant is popular locally, with great views and tables that spill out onto the street.

The Best Boutique Hotels in Palma de Mallorca

Palma’s BO Hotel is chic and central, with 19 contemporary rooms decked out with oak floors, polished ceramic bathrooms and all the latest mod. cons.. Some of the rooms and suites have private terraces with private hot tubs and fantastic views as well. Or you can get the full show from the roof terrace, which has a hot tub as well as sun loungers. Downstairs there’s a restaurant, lounge and bar, all decorated with local art.
The Art Hotel Palma is housed in a former antique store in Palma’s Old Town, and it looks as if some great pieces have been retained for the hotel. It has 13 spacious rooms, all with traditional tiled floors and and large windows, and they’re arranged around a peaceful central courtyard, which is also the perfect place for aperitifs before heading out into town.

Also in Palma’s Old Town, Canavall is a similarly small property, in a similarly elegant historic building. Inside it’s been beautifully restored and modernised. Its 10 rooms and suites and one apartment have been stylishly imagined and feature handmade tiles, exposed beams and local art. Some of the rooms have private terraces and balconies and the apartment has a kitchen too. The breakfast room is bright and cheerful and you’re in a great spot.
