Best Hotels in Amsterdam's Jewish Quarter and Plantage

This is a neighbourhood steeped in history. The men and women of Amsterdam's Jewish community were among Rembrandt's favourite subjects, and if you choose one of the best hotels in the Jewish Quarter (Jodenbuurt) and Plantage you'll be next to the Museum het Rembrandthuis, his former home and studio, and to other must-see landmarks such as the moving Joods Historisch Museum and the splendid 17th-century Portuguese Synagogue.

The Stadhuis-Opera complex – better known as the 'Stopera' - looming over the Amstel, is home to the Netherlands' national ballet and opera companies, while Waterlooplein, once the quarter's chief market square, is now crammed with trashy but colourful flea-market stalls. Instagrammers flock to Blauwbrug and Magere Brug, the most picturesque Amstel bridges. Hermitage Amsterdam, offshoot of the magnificent State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, draws culture vultures with dazzling works of art.

Across the Nieuwe Herengracht canal, the family-friendly Plantage district is a neighbourhood of leafy avenues, gracious 19th buildings and green spaces surrounding the Artis park and Hortus Botanicus, the world's oldest botanic garden. There's plenty here to keep kids occupied in any weather, from hundreds of animals and sea creatures in the Artis Zoo and Aquarium to interactive experiences at Tropenmuseum Junior, across the Singelgracht. Opt for one of the best hotels in the Jewish Quarter and Plantage and you're also just a few tram or metro stops from the historic Centrum and Centraal Station, and from the great art collections of the Museumkwartier.
