About Victoria

With wineries and top-notch foodie fare in spades, Victoria is a superb Australian destination for couples, families and groups of friends. There is a tremendous array of accommodation available across the region, from low-key guesthouses to luxurious hotels fit for a range of budgets. Many of the best places to stay in Victoria are in trendy Melbourne, the state capital, but there are some real gems tucked amidst the vineyards of the Mornington Peninsula or set in pretty towns along the Great Ocean Road.

Some of our Victoria Collections:

Melbourne, Victoria’s largest city, has a well-deserved reputation for fabulous food, cultural attractions aplenty and a cool, laid-back vibe. Built on the back of the gold rush, the city is home to grand old hotels and galleries, as well as a host of new rooftop bars and alleyway eateries in quirkily converted industrial buildings. Don’t miss a stroll through the Queen Victoria markets — the largest open-air market in the southern hemisphere — or catching a match at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Beyond Melbourne are Victoria’s historic gold mining towns, Ballarat included. The region is known for its natural beauty: from the majestic Great Ocean Road, where the Twelve Apostles jut out like knives and towns like lovely Lorne hug the coastline, to the tranquility of the wine-producing Yarra Valley. Venture north to the lush Grampians, or east for the Dandenong Ranges and flower-filled Olinda. Whether you’re dreaming of beautiful art hotels, boutique beach spots, or elegant rural B&Bs, Victoria has it all. The best places to stay in Victoria offer visitors a taste of the region’s great food and wine in beautifully-presented surroundings suffused with classic Aussie character.

The Best Places to Stay in Victoria

For Urban Luxury

  • The Ritz-Carlton Melbourne promises five-star style in central Melbourne, with a superb spa, indoor pool and chic restaurants. Glitzy rooms and suites with brass accents and crisp white linens boast panoramic views of the city skyline and the sea.
  • The Lyall Hotel's elegant rooms & suites are wonderfully soothing and indulgent, with marble bathrooms, white, grey and burnt orange interiors, and big windows inviting lots of light. A Melbourne favourite, the hotel also has a serene spa. One for fans of sophisticated contemporary-classic design.
  • United Places Botanic Gardens is made up of 12 swish, design-led suites overlooking Melbourne's Botanic Gardens. Big breakfasts are served in-suite, and guests get priority seating at Chef Scott Pickett's much-admired Matlida 159 restaurant, just next door. Innovative fare will delight sophisticated foodies.
  • Coppersmith Hotel in up-and-coming South Melbourne has whitewashed rooms and suites with a modern, minimalist feel. The 1860s façade also hides a buzzy neighbourhood bistro, where seasonal dishes are inspired by European cuisine. With 18 crafts beers on tap, this is a very tricky place to leave.

FOR A DESIGN HOTEL

  • Zagame's House is a hip design-led hotel on Lygon Street, on the edge of Melbourne's Little Italy. Think swish, moody guest rooms with a grown-up grey & white palette and blue velvet in the communal areas. Kick off the day with cracking brunches, and cosy up in the wine bar each evening. Very glamorous.
  • Hotel Vera has just seven hip suites in a 19th-century Ballarat mansion. Understated spaces feature modern art by female Australian artists, warm blue, pink, burnt orange or green tones, and indulgent marble bathrooms. Restaurant Babae is a fine dining favourite. Named for the co-founder's beloved grandmother, this is a wonderfully intimate boutique base in a beautiful Victoria city.
  • Alkina Lodge is a collection of three architecturally impressive lodges — rather than a traditional hotel — on the Great Ocean Road. Modern, and mostly monochromatic spaces have four bedrooms, whitewashed walls punctuated by big windows, slick kitchens & generous garden-view decks. Expect statement spaces with a strong focus on eco-conscious design, including handmade bricks, sustainable building materials and filtered rainwater.
  • The Mitchelton Hotel, created by acclaimed architecture and interiors firm Hecker Gutherie, is built around the iconic 1970s tower completed by architect Ted Ashton. In the Goulburn Valley, the hotel adjoins the Mitchelton Gallery of Aboriginal Art, and has its own cellar door, making it a multi-faceted destination in its own right. Interiors are slick and minimalist, with white and steely grey used throughout.
  • The Royce, housed in what was once Melbourne's first luxury automobile showroom, is also seriously cool. Rooms are modern and understated, but shared spaces with sleek marble & chrome accents ooze 1920s style. The cocktail bar has to be one of the top design spots in the city.
  • The Kilnhouses, inspired by old tobacco kilns which stud the landscape of rural Victoria, offer modern exteriors and comfortable, beautifully designed interiors by Russell Grainger. Set on a working cattle farm, these multi-bedoom lodges are ideal for travellers eager to hike, cycle and taste wondeful wine or ski during the winter months. A Grand Designs-esque property.

FOR A CHARMING B&B

  • La Maison St Arnaud B&B, a lovely cottage built in 1886, now has two elegant guest suites. Kickstart your day with owner Kellie-Anne's delicious home cooked breakfasts, before setting out to play golf, go fishing or explore pretty Rutherglen's fabulous cellar doors. There's a cosy sitting room and deck for unwinding with a good book or planning your next day out.
  • Llarrinda Bed & Breakfast, with a spacious suite and two-bedroom guest wing in the home of friendly owners Linda and Larry, is a wonderful springboard for discovering Wilsons Promontory National Park. Think big breakfasts, gorgeous gardens filled with Australian birds, and outdoorsy activities aplenty within easy reach. Adults only.
  • Old Chilli B&B has six charming guest rooms just a short walk from the heart of Daylesford. Think bathrooms with big tubs, French doors opening onto a shared terrace, and pretty sage-green paintwork. Kick start your day with homemade breakfasts, and unwind in the gardens. Very lovely for quiet couples.
  • Woolrich Retreat is made up of one inviting suite, and a 1920s-built two-bedroom garden cottage. Tucked on five leafy acres near Olinda, this charming retreat is wonderfully calm. Both spaces have kitchens, private decks, sitting rooms and garden views. For romantics or friends on holiday together.
  • Drom Aluinn B&B has three comfortable guest rooms decorated in soft blue and dove-grey tones. Expect stunning views over the surrounding farmland & Blue & Cathedral Ranges from each rooms, as well as from the shared lounge and deck. Sink into leather armchairs by the fire after big days of hiking, cycling and bird watching. The lovely owners cook up delicious breakfasts each morning, too.

For Foodies

  • Jackalope is a seriously swish modern hotel set in its own 12-acre vineyard on the striking Mornington Peninsula. Pick this place for cutting-edge design, farm-to-fork cuisine, wine tastings and amazing countryside views. A foodie favourite.
  • Lake House boasts waterfront rooms and suites set on six acres around Daylesford Lake. The award-winning restaurant uses produce from the hotel's own Dairy Flat Farm to create innovative dishes. Farm tours come highly recommended, too. Amongst Victoria's top foodie hotspots.
  • Royal Mail Hotel is a food and wine lover's dream, with a fabulous kitchen garden, fine dining restaurant and award-winning, 25,000 bottle wine cellar. With well-appointed rooms, self-catering apartments and houses available, this is a great pick for groups or families keen to explore the Grampians National Park.
  • Brae, headed up Chef Dan Hunter, is amongst Australia's very best restaurants. Much of the produce used in the kitchen is grown on the 30 acre farm, where you'll also find six superb modernist suites — only available for booking if you have a table at the restaurant. A dazzling foodie experience, with ever-changing tasting menus.
  • Chateau Yering promises 32 luxurious suites in a Victorian manor on the Yarra Valley’s first known winery. Stay here for antique opulence, marble bathrooms and grand evenings in Eleonore’s restaurant. Perfect for rural relaxation and to explore the region’s 70+ wineries!

For Seaside Style

  • Drift House in Port Fairy is a contemporary, adults-only boutique beach hotel with six luxurious suites. Expect free-standing baths, artisan breakfasts and striking views over the Moyne River from some of the beautiful rooms. Gourmet dinners can also be arranged, making this a top-notch stop on the Great Ocean Road.
  • Hotel Sorrento is a glamorous clifftop hotel overlooking Port Phillip Bay. A family-owned hotel with a century-long history, this spot has chic, understated rooms and suites clad in cream and white tones, with exposed stone and pale oak. A refreshing pool, lively bars and delectable eateries complete the picture, and the sea is just steps away. Very cool.

For Great Value

  • The Larwill Studio in Melbourne is a fresh and vibrant art-centric hotel with modern artwork and soft textures in contermporary spaces. Bicycles are available to hire, the team can arrange city tours and there are yoga mats in each room. Youthful, sociable and budget-friendly.
  • Hotel Frangos is a lovely boutique offering in the heart of Daylesford. Expect bright, playful interiors in an 1888-built edifice and very reasonable rates. Foodies will adore the focus on seasonal produce from local farms and south Australian wines. Regular events and menu updates bring guests back again and again.
