The Place Firenze

June marks the real beginning of European summer: the schools are not yet out in force, the weather is reliably warm, and cities across the continent are at their most alive. Many play host to a programme of festivals or exhibitions, others are recommended because June is the perfect time to explore before the peak summer crowds appear. Here are five cities that make a particularly strong case for a June visit.

Paris

Le Relais Montmartre

June is when Paris is in its element: warm enough for outdoor terraces or long evenings on the Seine, and the city's extraordinary concentration of museums and gardens at their most pleasant to explore. The Luxembourg and Tuileries gardens are full of Parisians and well-informed tourists alike; the Marais neighbourhood, with its galleries, Jewish bakeries, and fashion boutiques, is as good as it gets on a warm Tuesday afternoon; and the summer programme of outdoor cinema, music festivals, and Fête de la Musique (June 21) gives the city a celebratory energy that is particular to this month. June is also, crucially, before the August exodus that empties the better restaurants and fills the tourist traps.

  • Hôtel de JoBo takes its name from Joséphine Bonaparte, JoBo to those in the know, and is hidden behind a courtyard on Rue d'Ormesson in the heart of the Marais. The 24 rooms occupy the intimate remains of a historic monastery, and are decorated in an exuberant, slightly over-the-top style: toile wallpaper, patterned curtains, leopard-print bar, opulent carpets strewn with roses. It is a hotel that has a strong personality; it's a warm, theatrical, very Parisian home-away-from-home, a few minutes' walk from the Place des Vosges, the Picasso Museum, and Notre-Dame.
  • Le Relais Montmartre is a sophisticated boutique hotel in the 18th arrondissement, steps from the Moulin Rouge and the steep streets that lead up to the Sacré-Coeur. The 26 rooms are individually decorated, and the hotel has a library, a garden, and a sitting room with a fireplace, making it feel more like a private club than a conventional hotel. Montmartre in June, when the long light falls across the white dome and the city spreads below, is one of the better places in Paris to be.
  • Hôtel Bourg Tibourg is one of the most characterful boutique hotels in the Marais, designed by Jacques Garcia and occupying a building on the street that shares its name. The 24 rooms are small, as Paris hotels tend to be, but Garcia's Gothic-inflected, oriental-fabric, richly textured interiors make them feel atmospheric rather than cramped. There is a vaulted cellar dining room, a garden, and a bar with a vintage record player that sets the mood for the evenings. Guests looking for the junior suite will find considerably more space.
  • Hôtel Mansart occupies a 1720 building on the corner of Place Vendôme and Rue des Capucines, designed by Jules-Hardouin Mansart, Louis XIV's favourite architect and the man responsible for Versailles and the dome of the Invalides. The hotel takes its name from him, and rooms carry traces of successive historical periods: the 17th-century structure, the Second Empire furnishings, the Victorian character of its conversion to a hotel at the end of the 19th century. The rooms facing Place Vendôme and the column that Napoleon built are among the finest-located hotel rooms in the city. The service is warm and personal, and the price is considerably more modest than the address would suggest.

Dubrovnik

Villa Dubrovnik

Why visit Dubrovnik in June? Because it sits just before the summer's peak season, you can expect warm, clear Adriatic water, the walled old city at its most atmospheric, and the worst of the cruise ship crowds yet to arrive. The city walls, a 2km walk around medieval fortifications with views out to sea, are best done in the early morning light of June before the day heats up. Lokrum island, a short boat ride from the old harbour, offers shade and swimming away from the crowds. The oysters from Ston Bay, the local Plavac Mali wine, and the seafood restaurants of the old city are all excellent reasons to stay a few days.

  • The Byron is one of Dubrovnik's most distinctive small boutique hotels: just four rooms in a beautiful old building inside the old city walls, run by John and his team with a genuinely personal warmth. Guests arrive at Life According to KAWA, the hotel's ground-floor coffee shop and design boutique, where they are walked through the old city and delivered to their rooms with recommendations for restaurants, beaches, and day trips already forming. The rooms have kitchenettes and are furnished with care, and the location, a quiet street near the cathedral, 30 metres from Buza beach, is about as good as the old city gets.
  • Boutique Hotel Kazbek occupies a 16th-century villa in the quieter Lapad neighbourhood, a ten-minute taxi ride from the old city and right on the Luka Gruz inlet. The limestone courtyard with its stone urns and orange trees is the centrepiece of the property, which has twelve rooms, a pool, a sauna, and a kitchen that takes its alfresco lunches seriously. It is the hotel for those who have already seen the old city and want something more secluded.
  • Villa Allure is a carefully renovated Mediterranean villa behind a discreet doorway on the main road down to the old city, with nine rooms named for Dubrovnik's landmarks and styled with wooden-beamed ceilings, four-poster beds, exposed brick, and large shuttered windows that offer panoramic views over Banje Beach and the old town. The terrace breakfast, served under hundred-year-old orange and lemon trees beside the plunge pool, is one of the more pleasant morning experiences in the city.
  • Villa Dubrovnik is built into the limestone cliffs on the Adriatic coast east of the old city, accessible from the street via a glass lift that descends to the reception, then continues through pine trees to the rocks and the sea. Recently redesigned by Brazilian architect Arthur Casas in collaboration with the hotel's six decades of accumulated character, the 56 rooms and suites all have private balconies or terraces with sea views. The rooftop Prosciutto & Wine Bar, the Mediterranean restaurant Pjerin, the spa, and the indoor pool complete a hotel that is one of the finest in the eastern Adriatic.

Barcelona

The Cotton House

June is the month when Barcelona is at its most seductive: warm evenings on rooftop terraces are guaranteed, the beaches of Barceloneta accessible and not yet at their most overwhelmed, the Eixample neighbourhood's Modernista architecture glowing in the summer light, and Gaudí's masterworks, the Sagrada Família, the Pedrera, the Casa Batlló, taking visitors from around the world at all hours. June also brings the Sónar electronic music festival and the Grec festival of performing arts, so the city's cultural calendar is at its busiest. The food scene, from the Boqueria market to the neighbourhood restaurants of Poble Sec and Gràcia, is one of the best in Europe.

  • Praktik Rambla occupies a 19th-century palace on the Rambla de Catalunya, the more elegant, tree-lined sibling of Las Ramblas, in the heart of the Eixample. The building's original features have been preserved: Baroque columns, moulded ceilings, hydraulic-tile floors, and century-old woodwork, all set alongside contemporary minimalist rooms and a quiet interior terrace garden that serves as a genuine oasis in the middle of the city. Rooms are compact and well-designed, with some overlooking the boulevard; the eco-conscious approach, recycled materials, and locally sourced products sit comfortably with the building's heritage.
  • The Cotton House enjoys a prime location in central Barcelona. This luxurious, upmarket hotel blends traditional architecture with bold modern features. Curl up with a book in the library, lounge by the pool or relax with a drink on the terrace! An utterly stunning city spot.
  • Hotel Granvia is a three-star hotel in a 19th-century palace on the Gran Via, a few minutes' walk from Passeig de Gracia. Originally built in 1870 and reopened after a full renovation in 2013, the hotel retains its Art Deco cupola in the entrance, coffered ceilings, pillared arches, and a grand marble staircase, alongside 53 rooms decorated in a more restrained Regency style. The gardens, which run to 500 square metres, are one of the hotel's most appealing assets in June. The position, immediately between the Eixample's best architecture and the shops of the Passeig, is excellent.
  • Hotel Pulitzer is a genuinely social hotel in the heart of Barcelona, a few steps from Plaça de Catalunya. The 91 rooms, designed by Lázaro Rosa-Violán, blend Art Deco influences with a strong contemporary thread, and the hotel's identity is built as much around its public spaces as its rooms: a ground-floor restaurant serving slow-food Catalan cooking, a courtyard garden overflowing with plants, and a rooftop terrace that hosts live music five nights a week through summer, with local and international DJs and bands. The terrace has become one of the better outdoor summer venues in the city, drawing locals and guests alike.
  • Ohla Eixample is a design hotel in the Eixample with a striking geometric facade — repetitive patterns of interlocking rectangles that signal something interesting is happening inside — and interiors that deliver on the promise. The 94 rooms are highly efficient, with industrial touches (exposed ceilings, bold lighting) and deep bathtubs in contemporary bathrooms. The Michelin-starred restaurant on-site is one of Barcelona's better dining experiences, and the rooftop pool with its terrace bar is one of the more compelling places to spend a June evening above the city's rooftops.

Florence

Oltrarno Splendid

Florence in June is hot, busy, and as beautiful as anywhere in Europe. The queues at the Uffizi and the Accademia are a fact of life, but early booking and strategic timing, first thing in the morning or the hour before closing, make both manageable. The city is ideal for slow exploration between the major monuments: the leather markets of San Lorenzo, the independent bookshops and wine bars of the Oltrarno, the churches full of extraordinary frescoes that most visitors never find, and the view from the Piazzale Michelangelo in the long evening light. The food, built on the Florentine traditions of bistecca, ribollita, and pappa al pomodoro, is among the most satisfying in Italy.

  • Oltrarno Splendid occupies the top two floors of a 16th-century palazzo on Via dei Serragli, in the artisan quarter south of the Arno that gives the hotel its name. The 14 rooms were created by the same team behind AdAstra and SoprArno Suites — Francesco Maestrelli, Matteo and Marco Perduca, and designer Betty Soldi — and each is individually conceived with original frescoes, terracotta floors, vintage furniture sourced from antique markets, bespoke artworks, and freestanding bathtubs in many rooms. The top-floor breakfast room, with its Wes Anderson-esque marble tables, wicker chairs, and honesty bar stocked with Tuscan wine, has views over the rooftops of Florence, including the Palazzo Vecchio and the Duomo. The Ponte Vecchio is a few minutes' walk, and the neighbourhood — with its functioning workshops, independent bookshops, and family-run trattorie — gives a genuinely local experience of the city.
  • La Fonderia is a five-room guesthouse in a building that was once an artisan foundry, near the Arno River just outside the main historic centre. The rooms are spacious and individually styled with vintage finds, industrial accents, and bold colours, and the best have private terraces overlooking the surrounding rooftops. The owners' knowledge of Florence's restaurant scene and their willingness to share it are among the hotel's real assets.
  • La Maison du Sage is a boutique bed and breakfast in the Oltrarno neighbourhood, across the river from the Uffizi and the main historic centre, with eight rooms facing the church of Santa Croce. The building is beautifully restored, the common spaces are thoughtfully furnished, and the nightly aperitivo, Prosecco, wine, and light Florentine snacks give guests a natural reason to congregate and compare notes on the day. The host Aneta's warmth and willingness to help with reservations and recommendations is repeatedly noted by guests.
  • The Place Firenze is one of the best boutique hotels in Florence. Manager Claudio has been here since it opened in 2003, and he manages an outstanding team of staff. Located in the heart of the city, facing Santa Maria Novella Square, The Place is an exceptional property, more like a sophisticated home than a hotel, adored by everyone who stays behind its subtle townhouse façade. Inside, its elegant interiors, revamped by local architect Luigi Fragola in 2021, are home to centuries-old artefacts and reflect a clean, contemporary aesthetic, with added pops of colour in the accessories and furnishings made by local artisans and artists. The unique concept, the attention to detail and the impeccable hospitality make The Place the ideal hotel for curious discerning travellers.

Chicago

The Robey

Chicago in June is the American Midwest at its finest: the lakefront is open, the city's extraordinary architecture is best appreciated on foot and by river cruise, the music scene that gave the world the Chicago blues and house music is still operating in clubs across the South and West sides, and the restaurants, which have been quietly excellent for decades, are at full capacity. June also brings the Chicago Blues Festival, one of the world's great free music events, and a run of outdoor festivals along the lakefront. The Art Institute, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Cloud Gate sculpture in Millennium Park, and the architectural boat tours of the Chicago River are all unmissable.

  • Found Hotel Chicago River North sits in the River North neighbourhood, a ten-minute walk from both the Magnificent Mile and the Chicago Riverwalk, offering well-designed rooms at a price point that reflects the city rather than the headline hotel brands. The location is practical, and the hotel's close proximity to some of the city's best restaurants and bars makes it a strong base for exploring north of the river.
  • Longman & Eagle is a different proposition entirely: a Michelin-recommended bar and restaurant (it has been awarded a Bib Gourmand) in Logan Square with just six rooms above it, each individually designed with wood floors, exposed brick, original artworks, cassette players with curated mix tapes, and Aesop toiletries. The owners are co-founders of the Empty Bottle music venue, and that music-forward cultural sensibility runs through the property. The restaurant's farm-to-table, meat-heavy menu, biodynamic wines, and craft beers are as good a reason to stay as any, and the hotel is honest with potential guests that the rooms are above an "occasionally raucous, whisky-fueled tavern." Logan Square itself is one of the most interesting neighbourhoods in the city for independent restaurants and bars.
  • The Robey is a boutique hotel in a striking 1929 Art Deco building at the six-way intersection of North, Damen, and Milwaukee Avenues, the iconic crossroads of Bucktown and Wicker Park. The 69 rooms have high ceilings and evoke the building's industrial-chic character, with whitewashed interiors and great city views. The French-American Café Robey on the ground floor is as much a neighbourhood restaurant as a hotel one. The rooftop bar and pool are among the best outdoor summer spots on the north side, with 180-degree views of the Chicago skyline.
  • The Gwen is a Luxury Collection hotel on Rush Street in the Magnificent Mile, taking its name and design cues from sculptor Gwen Lux, whose works adorned the 1929 building that now houses it. The lobby and common spaces celebrate 1920s and 1930s Chicago with Art Deco detail and vintage glamour, while the 311 rooms are thoroughly contemporary with oversized showers, 65-inch televisions, and a strong hotel-as-lifestyle sensibility. The rooftop, heated by fire pits on cooler evenings, hosts the Tipsy Tea Party on weekends and evening cocktail events through the summer months.
