June marks the real beginning of European summer: the schools are not yet out in force, the weather is reliably warm, and cities across the continent are at their most alive. Many play host to a programme of festivals or exhibitions, others are recommended because June is the perfect time to explore before the peak summer crowds appear. Here are five cities that make a particularly strong case for a June visit.
June is when Paris is in its element: warm enough for outdoor terraces or long evenings on the Seine, and the city's extraordinary concentration of museums and gardens at their most pleasant to explore. The Luxembourg and Tuileries gardens are full of Parisians and well-informed tourists alike; the Marais neighbourhood, with its galleries, Jewish bakeries, and fashion boutiques, is as good as it gets on a warm Tuesday afternoon; and the summer programme of outdoor cinema, music festivals, and Fête de la Musique (June 21) gives the city a celebratory energy that is particular to this month. June is also, crucially, before the August exodus that empties the better restaurants and fills the tourist traps.
Why visit Dubrovnik in June? Because it sits just before the summer's peak season, you can expect warm, clear Adriatic water, the walled old city at its most atmospheric, and the worst of the cruise ship crowds yet to arrive. The city walls, a 2km walk around medieval fortifications with views out to sea, are best done in the early morning light of June before the day heats up. Lokrum island, a short boat ride from the old harbour, offers shade and swimming away from the crowds. The oysters from Ston Bay, the local Plavac Mali wine, and the seafood restaurants of the old city are all excellent reasons to stay a few days.
June is the month when Barcelona is at its most seductive: warm evenings on rooftop terraces are guaranteed, the beaches of Barceloneta accessible and not yet at their most overwhelmed, the Eixample neighbourhood's Modernista architecture glowing in the summer light, and Gaudí's masterworks, the Sagrada Família, the Pedrera, the Casa Batlló, taking visitors from around the world at all hours. June also brings the Sónar electronic music festival and the Grec festival of performing arts, so the city's cultural calendar is at its busiest. The food scene, from the Boqueria market to the neighbourhood restaurants of Poble Sec and Gràcia, is one of the best in Europe.
Florence in June is hot, busy, and as beautiful as anywhere in Europe. The queues at the Uffizi and the Accademia are a fact of life, but early booking and strategic timing, first thing in the morning or the hour before closing, make both manageable. The city is ideal for slow exploration between the major monuments: the leather markets of San Lorenzo, the independent bookshops and wine bars of the Oltrarno, the churches full of extraordinary frescoes that most visitors never find, and the view from the Piazzale Michelangelo in the long evening light. The food, built on the Florentine traditions of bistecca, ribollita, and pappa al pomodoro, is among the most satisfying in Italy.
Chicago in June is the American Midwest at its finest: the lakefront is open, the city's extraordinary architecture is best appreciated on foot and by river cruise, the music scene that gave the world the Chicago blues and house music is still operating in clubs across the South and West sides, and the restaurants, which have been quietly excellent for decades, are at full capacity. June also brings the Chicago Blues Festival, one of the world's great free music events, and a run of outdoor festivals along the lakefront. The Art Institute, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Cloud Gate sculpture in Millennium Park, and the architectural boat tours of the Chicago River are all unmissable.
