Chateau de Bagnois

Beautiful architecture, landscapes and wine make Burgundy feel like somewhat of an indulgent destination, and that’s before we even mention the food! But there’s something about these rural views shaped by viticulture, sunshine and the Renaissance that suggests personalised luxury, and makes us think not only of fine food and drink, but also boutique accommodation. If this resonates with you too, then our Gurus’ recommendations for the best boutique hotels in Burgundy will probably be just the thing to inspire you to book your own Burgundy trip. They’ve great recommendations for boutique hotels set amid Burgundy’s vineyards, boutique château hotels, boutique guesthouses, and stylish, spacious family-friendly hotels too. Whether you’re here to sightsee, taste, walk, admire, or all of those and more!

For a Special Occasion

La Borde

  • From the outside La Borde looks like a charming rural home, with traditional vine-clad stone walls, large shuttered windows, a turret-like tower and lovely mature gardens leading up to the front door. But inside you can see why this property has a five star rating. There are just five rooms and suites, and they’re all beautiful, featuring arching exposed beams, tiled floors and rustic features, but idyllically done. And then there’s the pool, and conservatory restaurant with its daily changing menu, and private wine tastings.

For a Château Stay

Chateau de Bagnois

  • Built during the Medieval period, the Château de Bagnols has plenty of château magic, including elegant turrets, pillars, vast stone fireplaces and even a bridge over a moat. Today it’s been carefully converted into a 27 room hotel that has retained the original features the château has collected throughout the ages, like wall-sized tapestries, murals, tiled floors and ornate fireplaces. There’s also an impressive collection of antiques. And a glorious spa, picturesque pool and a Michelin-starred restaurant.
  • The Château de Pierreclos is s striking, historic building set within the grounds of a working vineyard. All around the château are manicured gardens, but you can see the grapes beyond them. Inside the rooms have been carefully styled to flatter the building’s original features, but still feel contemporary. There’s a selection of configurations including elegant, spacious suites on the lower levels, and rooms with two single beds, tiled floors and exposed beams on the higher floors. There’s also a pool.

For Vineyard Vistas

Clos Saint Jacques

  • Built to be a winery in the 18th century, and overlooking vineyards in all directions, Clos Saint Jacques has recently been converted into a chic four room B&B. The rooms are spacious, with simple, tasteful details, art and antiques, and pale walls and linens. Located just outside the village of Meursault, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to eating and drinking.
  • Surrounded by vineyards, the Castel de Tres Girard is a charming old building now housing an elegant, eight room hotel with rural views, a fantastic restaurant, and a gorgeous outdoor pool. There’s lots of great walking trails around the property, and of course plenty of wine tasting to do.

For Seeing the Sights

Le Chambres de LImprimerie

  • Les Chambres de L'Imprimerie is a stylishly converted printing factory in Beaune. There are just five rooms and suites, all with huge windows, high ceilings, and decor that’s a meeting between their industrial past and chic, contemporary present. This is a good pick for families and groups too.
  • Cote Rempart is a five room guesthouse just inside the ramparts of the old city of Beaune, offering a quintessentially French experience. Despite the rustic exterior the five rooms are very elegant — our favourites sit under the arched beams of the roof. Breakfasts are sumptuous, and while there’s no restaurant the hosts will happily advise you; they’re specialists on the local vineyards too.

For a Rural Escape

La Ferme de Marie Eugenie

  • La Ferme de Marie-Eugenie is a very traditional, and beautiful, 18th century farmhouse set in lush gardens. Now converted into a four bedroom guesthouse, the property has been delightfully decorated in a style that blend the traditional building with contemporary trends for simplicity and a pale grey colour scheme. The cosy lounge is welcoming, and the gardens and terraces have many lovely places to sit. Large breakfasts are served, and every evening there’s a table d’hote supper served.
  • Moulin Renaudiots is a large, elegant country house turned five room hotel. Cottage gardens with topiary surround the property, and all of the five gorgeous rooms have lovely views. They also have beamed ceilings, simple colour schemes, huge beds, flattering lighting and design furniture, but feel comfortable with it. Downstairs there’s a lounge and dining room, where they do a fantastic table d’hote dinner three nights a week, accompanied by local wines.

For Families

Le Clos du Colombier

  • Le Clos du Colombier is a beautiful villa overlooking the vineyards around Pommard, near Beaune. The traditional exterior, with its large shuttered windows, is a beautiful backdrop to an evening's tipple on the terrace or in the gardens, and inside there’s an elegant restaurant. There’s also a spa, with a sauna and hot tub, plus there’s a pool and tennis courts. The 12 rooms and suites are all individually designed, and some are large enough for families. The decor is contemporary, but with attention paid to the original features, especially floors, stone walls and ceiling beams.
  • Converted from a pottery factory in Cluny, Le Potin Gourmand is now a cheerful 12 room hotel, with a convivial dining room and beautiful courtyard garden. The rooms are quirky meetings of the original building’s features and contemporary style — and they all do it differently. The restaurant is known for its authentic regional cuisine. The family suites are spacious, there’s a great collection of board games and breakfast is free for the under sixes.
  • Maison Tandem is a welcoming, four room, family-run guesthouse in Cluny. Each rooms is spacious, with wood floors, large windows and pleasant contemporary bathrooms. Outside there’s a pool, deck and gardens, and you’re just a short walk from lots of great places to eat and drink.

In addition to the rooms and suites, there are sophisticated living spaces to share, including a pool and spa, and there’s an excellent table d’hote restaurant.
  • Chez Les Fatien is an intimate find, tucked away down a pretty street in Beaune, which offers just four themed rooms with plenty of space, charm and luxury. The rooms are all different, but they’ve all got beautiful details, like flagged stone floors, high ceilings, exposed beams and stone walls. They serve breakfast in the pretty courtyard when possible, and supper on request, and the wine cellar is fantastic.
  • La Cour Berbisey is a smart Dijon villa turned five room spa hotel. The charmingly traditional exterior and interior features have all been well looked after, but dressed atop with contemporary details, to create a sophisticated atmosphere. The spa and pool are very contemporary too, so it all matches up pleasingly to grown-up effect.

For Foodies

Auberge du Paradis

  • The Auberge du Paradis is a country house surrounded by vineyards and fields of flowers, turned contemporary design hotel. Its nine rooms and suites are all spacious, but all uniquely designed, on the theme of spices, which is also what the restaurant is known for: traditional recipes and ingredients plus less usual spices. There’s a statement pool and chic bar and terrace too.
  • The Frederic Carrion Cuisine Hotel is a restaurant with ten rooms and suites, decorated with bold colours and patterned wallpaper. The restaurant attracts people from far afield, and specialises in gourmet versions of local delicacies, and there’s a spa too.
  • La Maison d'Olivier Leflaive is a converted 17th century townhouse in Puligny-Montrachet, charming, spacious and surrounded by vineyards. The 13 rooms and suites blend the building’s traditional features with contemporary elements, to comfortable result. The best suites have private terraces.
