About Devizes

Tucked in the heart of Wiltshire, Devizes is a characterful market town brimming with history, charm, and over 500 listed buildings. When it comes to hotels, you’ll find everything from cosy coaching inns that serve up hearty meals to stylish boutique spots and relaxed family-friendly stays. For heritage and atmosphere, the old inns near the Market Place are hard to beat, while the countryside just outside town is perfect for elegant B&Bs and country retreats.

Devizes grew up around its 11th-century Norman castle, once infamous for holding William the Conqueror’s son prisoner for two decades. While little of the fortress remains today, it’s a fascinating starting point before wandering into the Market Place, where weekly markets still bustle on ground that once formed the castle’s outer bailey. The surrounding streets are lined with handsome merchants’ houses from the 16th and 17th centuries, alongside historic churches, the town hall, and even the Wadworth Brewery, which still offers tours. Set on the edge of the Vale of Pewsey, between Chippenham and Trowbridge, Devizes is surrounded by countryside that’s perfect for walking, cycling, or simply soaking up the views.
