The Alsace Wine Route — or Route des Vins — winds 170 kilometres from Marlenheim to Mulhouse close to France’s border with Germany, passing through some 70 wine-growing villages. Our guide to the best wine hotels in Alsace focuses on many of these villages, some of which, such as Kaysersberg, Ribeauvillé, Andlau and Obernai, are attractive fortified centres. Like the wines they produce — Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris — they have Germanic-sounding names; the flavours, however, are definitely French! For foodies

The rooms are idiosyncratic — from chalet-chic to ultra-modern — but the big draw at Le Cerf in Marlenheim is Michel Hussar’s Michelin-starred Alsatian cooking. There’s a lovely terrace for outdoor dining too.
Like Le Cerf, Le Parc in Obernai, has a traditional Alpine exterior that belies a contemporary interior. Likewise, the food is a modern take on traditional Alsatian cuisine. There are also indoor and outdoor pools to revive after all that vineyard touring.
La Maison des Tetes in Colmar has five-star elegance and a richly decorated restaurant for enjoying its gourmet cooking, plus a shady terrace for sundowners.
Le Chambard is a gorgeous luxury hotel complete with a spa and a Michelin starred restaurant. Interiors feel light, contemporary, and fresh yet pay homage to the area's roots. A real must for those on a gastronomic tour.

For a spa hotel

Hostellerie des Chateaux et Spa in Ottrott is a luxurious spa hotel located on the pilgrim trail. Rooms and renovated suites (fitted with a private sauna and whirlpool tub), complement the extensive wellness facilities which include indoor and outdoor pools, indoor and outdoor hot tubs, hammams, experiment showers and saunas. Two restaurants with excellent Alsatian cuisine complete the picture on this indulgent stay.
5 Terres Hotel et Spa is a four-star hotel and spa set in the heart of Alsace. Rooms are dressed in an earthy palette to complement the exposed wooden beams. With a cavernous underground spa made of sandstone, this hotel makes a unique choice for a spa break.

For a cosy traditional stay

With pretty blue shutters and overflowing window boxes, L’Ami Fritz is a sturdy village house in the centre of Ottrott. Interiors are cosily traditional, plus there’s an outdoor pool and hearty Alsatian food served in the beamed dining room or on the terrace.
La Grange a Elise, near Mulhouse, has five handsomely furnished rooms — think antiques and parquet flooring — a pretty garden, and gorgeous homemade pastries for breakfast.
La Cour du Bailli is a quaint hotel with a spa, indoor pool and courtyard restaurant in the heart of Alsace wine country not far from Selestat. Bedrooms and suites are decorated in an authentic period Alsatian style. A charming option for a country hideaway.

For luxury

Le Grand Chalet et Spa is an adult-only luxury retreat in the heart of the wine country, just outside Colmar. Beautiful suites offer stunning views and chefs will individually prepare breakfast and evening meals to be enjoyed in your room. Complete with a spa, this is a luxurious base well suited to couples.

For good value

On the banks of the L’Ill River, Les Pres d’Ondine has bright and homely rooms and a shady terrace. Plus there’s a sauna and hot tub for easing tired limbs. A cosy and good value option.
Tucked away in deer-filled woods near Selestat, Auberge de L'Illwald offers colourful modern rooms, a small but elegant restaurant, and an outdoor pool. With luck, you might spot eagles flying overhead. You're getting a lot for your money here.
La Maison d'Emilie is another great value option. This renovated 17th-century village house and B&B offers rooms with a mix of modern and old: exposed beams, minimalist decor and designer furniture. The atmospheric restaurant serves seasonal, locally-sourced meals. A charming stay.

For relaxation

For a relaxing, romantic escape, try the chalet-style Le Clos St Vincent, Ribeauvillé, set high amongst the vineyards, with balconied rooms and an indoor pool. A lovely hideaway.
La Haute Grange is a red-painted, chalet-style farmhouse with just four bedrooms. Beams and stone walls have been given a chic, creamy-white makeover, turning this into a restful, adults-only haven.
In the heart of medieval Obernai, A la Cour d’Alsace is an elegant retreat with lovely gardens, an indoor pool and — best of all — a spa.

For a boutique

The name — Le B Espace Suites — alerts you that this is a one-off! This traditional timbered house at Riquewihr reveals unexpectedly cool interiors: bold colours, silk covers and contemporary lighting mix with exposed stone walls, tiled floors and huge beams. Decorations are eclectic and there’s a sexy red dining room with a wood-fired oven and spit-roast.
Hôtel a la Ferme, in the small village of Osthouse on the Rhine, is a slick farmhouse conversion where rooms mix contemporary with vintage. It has a well-regarded restaurant plus free bicycles for exploring the famed ‘Route des Vins’.
In the centre of Colmar, Hotel Quatorze is a study in chic: monochrome bedrooms, original artworks and designer furniture. There’s a black-and-white breakfast room, a sunny terrace for drinks and plenty of restaurants nearby for evening meals.
