About Paris
Paris has been lauded, doted upon, and sung about by so many people that there's little to add. So let's keep it simple: it's incredibly beautiful; it’s home to a glorious array of art; and its grand boulevards and their cafe culture offer one of the most pleasurable ways imaginable to while away time. But, and this is a BIG BUT, Paris’s hotel rating system is famously variable. Some call it charming, or eccentric, but for most it’s a real challenge. Which is why personal recommendations from the Hotel Gurus are particularly useful when it comes to the best places to stay in Paris.

The Best Places to Stay in Paris
For a Special Occasion
- L’Hôtel was Oscar Wilde’s Left Bank address until his untimely death in one of their rooms, a fact that’s romantic on so many levels, but probably most relevant here because he’s known for having romantic, decadent aesthetic tastes. Obviously the decor has changed since his time, but it’s still flamboyant and beautiful, arranged around a fabulous circular atrium, with the 20 rooms and suites offering a variety of sizes and jewel-box worthy colour palettes. There’s also a wonderfully luxurious spa and a candlelit plunge pool.
- For something really special stay at the Hotel Costes, an achingly hip boudoir style hotel in a prime location on the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, one of the smartest streets in Paris. Which is why so many A-listers want to stay there. That and the opulent Jacques Garcia haute-bordello stye decor, the shadowy corners and curtained daybeds in the fabulous pool room, the trendy restaurant and the hip bar with live DJ sets… It’s really a different breed of hotel, and oh-so private, exclusive and romantic.
- In this article we’re going to wax lyrical about many a hotel location, but the location of the Pavillon de la Reine, in the Place des Vosges, is difficult to beat. This really has to be one of the finest squares in Paris, just on the dressy side of the Marais. You have to approach this hotel through a peaceful courtyard garden, and it makes sense, because this 17th Century beauty was once the residence of Anne of Austria, wife of Louis XIII. Parisian royalty. The interiors have been updated, and there’s now a spa and an honesty bar, but many of the romantic charms are the same as during Anne’s time
Paris Grande Dames
- Le Bristol is a stunning grande dame hotel on the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in the heart of Paris’s designer district, with 188 beautiful rooms and suites stuffed with antiques and original art – some with incredible city views too, arranged around a wonderfully peaceful central courtyard garden. There’s also a choice of dining in either of the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurants, relaxing in the La Prairie spa, enjoying Paris’s only rooftop pool or checking out the hotel’s trendy bar. This is the kind of hotel that really looks after you personally and with great respect and refinement.
For a room with a view
- The Hotel Bowmann occupies a beautiful Haussmann building in the 8th Arrondissement, and while it’s not particularly close to any of the major sights, that does mean that the views from its private terraces offer views of more than one of them. In a quality field the most romantic room is probably the Eiffel Tower View Suite, but all the 53 rooms are beautiful and romantic, with a luxurious, very Parisian feel of hardwood floors, wall reliefs, chandeliers and gilded mirrors. The spa promises to be a proper escape, and foodies are very fond of the 99 Haussmann restaurant, which offers Parisian fine-dining at its best.
- Surprisingly low-rise to be in a list of Paris hotels with a view is the Hotel Le Meurice, which is ideally located, overlooking the Tuileries and beyond. This is one of Paris’ great "grande dame" hotels, and one of the chicest of them too, with beautiful Empire era decor and just the right amount of gold, glass and marble, and just the right sort of paintings. The restaurant has a Michelin star, the bar is Versailles themed and the Belle Etoile Suite has an amazing 360º view over Paris.
- The Hotel Brighton is almost right next door to Le Meurice, an extremely simple-yet-elegant four-star hotel on the Rue du Rivoli, directly opposite the Tuileries Gardens with views up to the Louvre and down to the Orangerie. The best views are still from the rooms at the top of the hotel, but it’s also nice to sit in the ground floor bars and restaurants and look across to the Tuileries. And the bill will be easier to look at than if you stayed at Le Meurice!
- The classic view of Paris must include the Eiffel Tower, and the Hôtel La Comtesse is offering just such a view. This 40 room Paris bolt-hole is in a beautiful 19th century Haussmann building close to the Champs de Mars, and it’s elegantly themed on French literary salons and the women who hosted them. The suites have the best views of the tower, some of the other rooms aren’t high enough.
- If you want to open the doors of your private hotel room terrace and look out on a view of the Eiffel Tower then the Shangri-La Paris is a good place to start imagining yourself. This luxurious, colonial-style hotel has been converted from several turn-of-the-century townhouses, and now offers 100 rooms and suites, an elegant pool, the beautiful L'Abeille restaurant with its two Michelin stars and a spa and gym. The decor ranges from rarities from the Orient to Paris plush, and some lovely in-between styles.
Some of the Most Romantic Hotels in Paris
- From the decadent, sensuous Belle Époque revival decor and luxurious details, the Maison Souquet looks and sounds perfectly romantic, but there’s an added tinge of something in the fact that this beautiful Montmartre building has been converted from a former pleasure house. There are just 20 rooms, decorated in rich, dark colours with luxurious silks, satins and velvets, plus plenty of gilt and some beautiful mirrors. You can reserve the hotel’s spa and pool for private use, which feels very honeymoon-y decadent.
- The Hotel Bourg Tibourg is a compact, Parisian townhouse on the outside, but on the inside it’s nothing less than a Moorish palace, complete with sultry boudoirs dripping with rich fabrics held in place by tassels, fragranced by innumerable scented candles and dimly, but beautifully lit. Definitely sensual, this 30 room hotel is in a great spot close to the Pompidou Centre and the Marais, and surrounded by cafes, bars, boutiques and galleries. There’s no restaurant, but they do offer breakfast and room service and there’s a gorgeous lounge which lends the feeling of being a houseguest at a wonderful party…
Chic Paris Pads and Design Hotels
- There’s nowhere quite like Le Petit Moulin, the fabulous, 17 room, four star boutique hotel designed by Christian Lacroix, and perfectly positioned in the romantic Marais. Each of the rooms is totally unique, because why would you miss an opportunity to experiment with colour and design? And all are bright, beautiful and confident. Monsieur Lacroix kept the facade, of the oldest boulangerie in Paris, where they say Victor Hugo bought his baguettes, but aside from that he’s put his colourful, playful stamp on everything.
- The 1K Hotel is a super cool four star hotel in the Marais, with a super cool cocktail bar, 52 super cool rooms with super cool art on the walls and lots of white surfaces and natural light — and two have their own private, heated outdoor plunge pools.
- Fouquet’s Barrière is a collaboration between architect Edouard Francois and Jacques Garcia: the aim being to create a 21st Century French palace. Which to them means chocolate coloured leather walls, TVs encased in sharkskin, and sofas in shades of gold. If you're looking for the royal treatment this is your man -— or else your personal butler is.
- The Fauchon L'Hôtel looks like its rooms belong in a contemporary home beautiful magazine, in an article promoting the mix of original features with contemporary design. Behind its beautiful Haussmann facade its 54 guestrooms are contemporary in style, with custom made furniture and luxury fabrics in a palette or rich golds and dusky pinks, and a geometric design. The rooms on one side offer views of the Eiffel Tower, and its 8th Arrondissement location is within a short walk of the Louvre etc.. A customised gourmet bar in each room offers complimentary Fauchon edibles: buttery salt caramels, fruit jellies, chocolate truffles. And its Grand Cafe is worth a visit even if you’re not staying here.
For Families
- Close to the Louvre and with a Michelin-starred restaurant probably aren’t top of our list when it comes to choosing a family hotel in Paris, but those are just some of the reasons we love the Hotel Castille and we think your family will too. One of the main reasons we think this is a great family hotel is the range of rooms and room sizes. There are 108 rooms, some quite bijoux and some as large as an apartment, so there’s going to be something to fit you. Its rooms come in a range of styles too; you'll find classic 1930s France in the Rivoli wing, and contemporary France in the Opéra wing. This recommendation might not be for every family, but if you’re looking to treat yourselves then this is a fantastic, centrally located option that you’ll really remember.
- The Hotel des Grands Hommes is a refined townhouse hotel right on the doorstep of the Pantheon in the 5th Arrondissement. The decor is fantastically 19th century, with some great Napoleonic touches, like formal motif wallpaper and neoclassical objets d’art. But what we’re really recommending it for is the size of its suites, which have a lounge area as well as multiple, or interconnecting bedrooms, so there’s plenty of space for your family to relax. And of course the location is fantastic: opposite one of Paris’s most famous landmarks.
For great value
- The Hôtel Providence is boutique, bohemian and intimate, with just 18 rooms decorated in plush fabrics and carefully selected antiques, flea-market treasures and designer pieces. Suites have their own mini-cocktail bar and the best, at the top of the hotel, have balconies or private terraces and views over Montmartre. The 10th Arrondissement location is what helps keep the prices down here, but you’re very close to the Marché de St-Martin gourmet food market and about a kilometres walk from the Pompidou Centre or the Marais.
Our Top Left Bank Picks
- The Relais St Germain is a charming Art Deco hotel era hotel is on the Boulevard Saint Germain, which is a wonderful Left Bank address surrounded by luxurious boutiques, cafes and bars. Its 22 rooms and suites have an air of the historic about them, with opulent furnishings and classic French prints and patterns. And the restaurant is gourmet.
- For spectacular views and a designer interior one of the best hotels in the Latin Quarter has to be the Notre Dame Hotel. It’s got stunning views over one of Paris's most famous landmarks, coupled with retro-modern interiors by Christian Lacroix.
Stay near the Champs Élysées
- The Hotel Balzac offers you the opportunity to stay just off the Champs-Élysées, and enjoy your own private view of the Eiffel Tower, with the sort of luxurious, classically French interiors to match. It has 69 rooms and suites, and plenty of them have incredible views, including the Royal Suite, which has both dining and living rooms orientated towards the tower, and a huge private balcony. But if you choose one that doesn’t you can still enjoy Eiffel Tower views from the rooftop and the glamorous lounge bar. The Hotel Balzac’s dining salon has a boudoir-esque feel with vibrant velvet sofas and Louis XIV chairs. And right next door is one of Paris’s three Michelin-starred restaurants.
Stay near the Eiffel Tower
- Simply elegant and elegantly simple, La Comtesse is just steps away from the Champs de Mars, set in a 19th century Haussmann building, offering Eiffel-facing suites resplendent in a chic, contemporary and minimalist design with spacious marble-tiled bathrooms. The breakfast room is a particular highlight, with dark feature walls, tables lined with red and grey velvet chairs and, above you, vast painted ceilings reminiscent of the literary salons of times gone by.

Travel information
- Paris has two airports, Charles de Gaulle Airport and Paris Orly Airport. From Charles de Gaulle the easiest and least expensive way into town is on the train. There are buses, shuttles and taxis too, but the traffic means travel times are unpredictable. To get from Orly you can take the shuttle or a taxi, driving in a designated lane, to the nearest Metro station.
- If you plan to hire a car, we recommend you visit our online partner Rentalcars for the best prices.
- You know what the song says about loving Paris in all the seasons? Well, it’s quite common to fall in love with Paris every time you visit, and this really is a year round destination. As the song says: in summer it sizzles, and in winter it drizzles, and to that we could add that in summer it’s busy with visitors, while many Parisians up sticks and leave town so you might be surprised that some businesses appear to be closed — we know!
