About Malta

The Maltese archipelago occupies a strategic spot in the Mediterranean Sea between North Africa and Sicily. Its history dates back centuries, and many of the best places to stay in Malta have been created from traditional period properties both in the main towns and tucked away in the pretty countryside inland.

The vibe here is very laid back, though over the past few years Malta has seen a burgeoning club scene and the annual international arts festival, (with its wide mix of music, dance and many other artistic forms), has brought in a new hip crowd.

If you're after a sandy beach, you'll find a few, but most will be mobbed during the peak holiday periods. You will though discover a plethora of dramatic rocky coves, and a glorious turquoise sea in which to cool off.

Diving is another big draw - it's regarded as one of the best spots in Europe - with some of the best sites found just off Gozo. But for the less experienced, there's plenty of good snorkelling too!

What Not To Miss

  • The stunning St John's Co-Cathedral oozes history and charm. Built originally for the Knights of St John, it's filled to the brim with Baroque art and architecture, plus there's a stunning marble floor, and an attached oratory and museum where you'll spot a couple of Caravaggios.
  • Be sure to visit the Megalithic Temples of Malta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built between 3600 BC and 700 BC. These are believed to be some of the oldest free-standing stones in the world - a breathtaking thought.
  • Head over to the beautiful St Peter's Pool to spend your afternoon diving from the cove into the turquoise water or relax with a book and soak up the sun. With restaurants nearby in case the kids get hungry, it's a great family day out.
  • Spend the day wandering around Valletta, the island's capital and a World Heritage site filled with some of the best places to stay in Malta. With gorgeous Baroque architecture everywhere you look, (such as in the gorgeous 16th century Casa Rocca Piccola palace), and a number of bustling restaurants offering splendid hilltop views, you'll love the feel of the place!

Our guide to the best places to stay Malta has something for all tastes and budgets whether you're looking for a cheap and cheerful B&B or no-holds-barred, five star luxury.
