20 Best Wine Hotels in Burgundy

Burgundy is home to thousands and thousands of small scale wine producers, both red and white. Wherever you travel through the region you will see vineyard views, and signs to cellar doors, and every time you sit down to eat you’ll see a menu rich with locally produced wines. So in essence every hotel in Burgundy is a wine hotel, but our Hotel Gurus say ‘not quite’. For them the best wine hotels in Burgundy are those offering something more than just local wines on the menu. They might be part of a working vineyard or winery, or part of a larger wine estate, or in a significant wine producing village or hamlet. And while the most famous wine producing areas in Burgundy are probably the long, scenic corridor on the bank of the Saône river designated Beaujolais, and the Côte d'Or, a picturesque spot between Dijon and Beaune including Meursault, our Hotel Gurus have uncovered the best wine hotels in Burgundy in more obscure pockets too.

For the Scrapbook

The Château de Pierreclos is an imposing château on a working vineyard. The building is huge, a warm stone castle with square towers and huge windows, but there are just five rooms available to guests — all huge and immaculately styled. Manicured gardens and terraces overlooking the vines surround the château, plus there’s an outdoor pool and an incredible wine list.
The Château de Pizay is an elegant château turned 62 room hotel, surrounded by acres of Beaujolais vines. Some of the best views are from the pool. The hotel also has a large spa with a hammam, sauna and hydrotherapy pool, a Michelin-starred restaurant, and bike hire. And the rooms are a fabulous, and fabulously varied collection — all stylish and all spacious.

For Vineyard Views

Meursault’s Hotel La Cueillette occupies a graceful, 19th century château, delightfully positioned on the edge of the village, and surrounded by rows of grapevines. In addition to the idyllic vineyard views, the hotel’s 19 rooms and suites are simply decorated to make the most of the region’s lovely light and the building’s impressive scale. There’s a fine dining restaurant, and the world’s first ‘fruititherapie’ spa, where materials for the treatments are made from the parts of the grapevine left over after the wine making process is complete.

For Foodies

La Courtille de Solutre is a small, stylish restaurant with rooms in the pretty village of Solutré-Pouilly. The restaurant is known for its regional classics, locally sourced menu, and excellent wine list, and the six rooms upstairs are simply and comfortably decorated in a chic colour scheme. A deliciously peaceful pick.
Lameloise is a family-run restaurant and hotel, with a rich gastronomic heritage, and cuisine that’s known for being fantastic, yet unpretentious. The restaurant sits below 16 rooms and suites, all spacious and traditionally decorated. The location, just south of Pulgny-Montrachet and Meursault, is ideal for exploring local vineyards.

For the Château Experience

The Château d'Ige is a small but historic castle, with atmospheric turrets housing spiral staircases leading up to many of the hotel’s 16 rooms and suites. The stone flagged floors are tucked under carpets in some of the rooms, but remain exposed in others, and in the fantastically memorable restaurant. Some rooms also have vast four-poster beds, or original domed ceilings, and many have views out onto the terrace, gardens and pool. And it’s surprisingly affordable!

For Romantics

La Maison d'Olivier Leflaive is a carefully converted 17th century townhouse in charming Puligny-Montrachet, surrounded by some of Burgundy’s best wine growing areas. Being within the boundaries of a town means you’re surrounded by great places to eat and drink, but the hotel has an excellent bar and restaurant of its own, and a lovely courtyard. The 13 rooms and suites are all individually decorated in a range of chic to rustic chic finishes.
Converted from an 18th century winery, Clos Saint Jacques is a beautiful, four room guesthouse wonderfully steeped with the charm of Meursault, where it’s located. Each room has been stylishly decorated to make the most of original features like exposed beams, bare stone and brick, and flagged floors, and there’s a lovely collection of antiques too. There’s no restaurant but you’re just a short stroll from a veritable feast of places to eat and drink.

For Families

The Hostellerie Le Cedre is an elegant hotel converted from a mansion set in a picturesque garden in the centre of Beaune. A smart hotel today, with 40 rooms and suites, we especially recommend this hotel to families, because of their spacious family suites with mezzanine sleeping levels, and their babysitting service; and to foodies, because of the Michelin-starred gourmet restaurant. The hotel also has a spa, complete with hammam and hot tub, and they can even host pets.
Le Clos du Colombier is a charmingly converted wine estate with 12 delightful rooms and suites and wonderful rural views. The decor is simple, spacious and elegant, and the family suites are very well laid out. There are huge gardens, a pool, a library, a spa with a hot tub and sauna, and a welcoming restaurant specialising in local cuisine. They even offer a babysitting service.
The Chateau de Besseuil is an elegant 16th century residence surrounded by vineyards, now carefully converted into a hotel. The original building has been broken up into 20 rooms in a range of sizes, from doubles, to three bedroom apartments — and featuring chic original features. In addition to the contemporary bathrooms added, the hotel owners also added a heated swimming pool in their conversion, and a chic bar and gourmet restaurant.

For a Rural Retreat

Le Logis d'Aze is an elegant country house on its own vineyard, offering four spaciously, and simply decorated rooms to guests. This is a laid-back welcoming property which is perfect for cyclists or walkers, or anyone wanting to explore the local vineyards at their own pace, families included. There’s no restaurant, but there is a library and a beautiful garden.
Ermitage de Corton is a relatively modern country house hotel in charming Chorey-les-Beaune with rural, and vineyard, views in all directions. The décor throughout the hotel is simple and traditional, from the 12 rooms and suites with their wood floors and white walls, to the traditionally panelled bar with vineyard views and elegant restaurant specialising in local cuisine.

For Sight Seeing

Le Central Boutique Hôtel is a carefully renovated 16th century property in central Beaune. The 23 rooms and suites are dressed with simple, contemporary furnishings — and there’s a restaurant and bar to match. If the weather’s nice you can also dine in the charming courtyard.
The Hotel du Vieux Moulin is a simple, seven room hotel perfectly located for the cellar doors of the Chablis region. The decor blends the building’s traditional tile and stone features with contemporary décor, and the rooms are large and light. There’s a lovely terrace and bar, and the excellent restaurant specialises in regional delicacies, and wines of the region.
The Hostellerie des Clos is a lovely hotel in the Chablis region, with 36 rooms and suites and great hotel facilities, including a gym, spa and sauna. The decor is simple, with elegant grey tones and fashionable details. The restaurant specialises in Burgundian cuisine, and when the weather is fine it spills out onto a lovely, peaceful terrace. The location is perfect for exploring the region.
The Hotel Le Montrachet has been converted from a really romantic, 19th century residence in the delightful village of Puligny-Montrachet. Within are 31 rooms and suites, decorated in contemporary colours and furnishings, but retaining some of the building’s original features. The location is idea for golfers, as well as anyone wanting to explore the wineries of Burgundy, and there’s plenty of hotel comfort.

For Great Value

The Auberge de Clochemerle is a charming country inn in the pretty village of Vaux-en-Beaujolais. There are just ten rooms and suites, decorated in a surprisingly contemporary style with large photo-murals of grape vines and chic bathrooms. There are vineyard views on one side of the property, and the other side overlooks a garden. Plus there’s a great little restaurant with a courtyard.
Beaune’s Hotel de France is centrally located, and great value with it. This is a simple but stylish pick, with 22 rooms and suites decorated in contemporary colours, but featuring traditional wood fittings and fireplaces. There’s a lovely bar and terrace, and if the weather is fine you can also enjoy a meal alfresco, if not the restaurant is lovely and simple too, and known for its regional specialities.
