About Provence

An enthralling land of sprawling lavender fields, picturesque medieval hilltop villages and family-run vineyards, Provence is amongst France’s most iconic destinations. Famed for its fabulous food as well as its fascinating heritage landmarks, Provence is bursting with enchanting B&Bs, converted chateaux, hotels and farmhouse escapes. Whether you’re travelling as a couple or with friends and family, our list of the best places to stay in Provence highlights top spots across the region, perfect for a memorable holiday.

Some of our Provence collections:

There’s an almost endless list of striking towns and cities for those dreaming of lively bars, eateries, boutiques and galleries in the region. Marseille, the regional capital, is a the second-largest city in France and has a very interesting old trading port. Aix-en-Provence is a favourite amongst well-heeled French travellers, with rapid TGV links from Paris, whilst the cities of Nîmes and Avignon promise ancient ruins and Michelin-starred dining. Orange and Vaison La Romaine will delight those intrigued by Roman ruins; off-the-beaten track Uzès is known for its impressive château and bustling farmers’ markets. Artists, on the other hand, have long flocked to Arles and St-Rémy-de-Provence — both frequented by Van Gogh — and their artwork is recognised through some fantastic museums. Aix’s Atelier de Cézanne is terrific, as are Arles’ and St-Rémy-de-Provence’s Van Gogh trails.

Head into the countryside for tours and tastings at spectacular vineyards, long walks, cycles and horse rides between fields of lavender, or to discover the imposing Gorges du Verdon and the wetlands of the Camargue. Visit vibrant antiques markets, feast at family-owned restaurants and kick back at some of the best places to stay in Provence as you wind your way through the region. This really is a magical French destination.

The Best Places to Stay in Provence

FOR FOODIES

  • Les Lodges Sainte Victoire sits within a private estate near Aix-en-Provence, filled with vines and olive trees. Indulgent contemporary interiors, swimming pools and a deluxe spa add to the appeal, but the real draw is the Michelin-starred Saint Estève restaurant, where Chef Julien Le Goff showcases an innovative seasonal menu. Superb.
  • La Mirande was previously a cardinal's palace, and is now an impeccably-decorated luxury hotel with 26 guestrooms. One for romantic couples and foodies, this Avignon property boasts a fantastic Michelin-starred restaurant where Chef Florent Pietravalle crafts delightful dishes. The cookery school is a highlight for would-be chefs! The Palais des Papes is across the street.
  • Château de Massillan was built in 1550 for one of the mistresses of Henry II. Surrounded by 24 acres of parkland, this luxury hotel now offers 32 rooms and suites, as well as an excellent restaurant. Foodies can savour flavours from the kitchen garden, used by Chef Mickaël Furnion and his team to create delectable gourmet dishes paired with Provençal and Côte du Rhone wines. A foodie favourite.
  • L'Artemise is a gastronomic restaurant with five contemporary rooms on a hillside close to Uzès. Expect commanding views of the surrounding countryside, an elegant spa, verdant gardens and an impressive art collection. The superb restaurant offers new dishes each day, reflecting top seasonal produce. A modern hideaway for design lovers and foodies.
  • Le Mas de Boudan is striking Provençal farmhouse with four contemporary rooms above a marvellous Michelin-starred restaurant. Led by Chef Jérôme Nutile, the restaurant prides itself on its creative haute cuisine, featuring Camargues oysters, fish from Le-Grau-Du-Roi served in a saffron broth, or mustard-rubbed lamb chops. You can also expect an impressive wine cellar and dedicated cheese room.

For Romance

  • La Divine Comédie boasts the largest private garden in Avignon. Tucked beneath leafy trees, this historic mansion offers five enchanting suites with antique furnishings and swish bathrooms. Kick back in the pool and mini-spa after exploring the city. Absolute luxury — perfect for a dream honeymoon.
  • La Maison d'Uzès promises a five-star stay in the centre of town. A magnificent 17th-century staircase leads to elegant rooms with granite fireplaces and indulgent bathrooms, whilst the Michelin-starred restaurant packs a real punch when it comes to southern French flavours. Romantic luxury.
  • L'Hotel Particulier promises an elegant stay in a grand mansion tucked away amongst Arles' little back streets, complete with a pool and hidden garden. Think sophisticated rooms with a soothing pastel palette, a small bar serving light meals, and an enchanting little spa. An indulgent couples' hideaway.
  • Justin de Provence is a charming, owner-run hotel set within seven hectares of grounds near Orange. The carefully restored farm houses five enchanting rooms, decorated with furniture sourced by owners Isabelle and Philippe. Kick back in the indoor and outdoor pools, hot tub and hammam before tucking in to fresh, homemade fare. Small, restful and romantic.
  • La Maison du Village offers just five rooms in a beautiful restored townhouse in St-Rémy-de-Provence. Dating back to the 1750s, the house has cream and white interiors, wooden-beamed ceilings and pretty chandeliers. Understated and magical, with fresh breakfasts served in the courtyard garden and lovely jazz evenings.
  • Jardins Secrets Hotel & Spa is a haven in the heart of Nîmes. Couples will be charmed by the Baroque-Rococco interiors of this 18th-century coaching inn. Expect sumptuous rooms, a spoiling spa and a pool framed by palms, orange and olive trees. Cosy up by the fire in the Napoleon III bar. Very romantic.

FOR FAMILIES or Groups

  • Le Mas Saint Florent is a charming retreat just outside Arles. Expect heaps of character, cosy fireplaces and period features, a generous swimming pool and flexible suites with space for the whole family. An idyllic French escape.
  • Hôtel le Vallon de Valrugues & Spa offers 50 indulgent rooms, suites and villas, just 800 metres from St-Rémy. Other highlights include the sumptuous 600 sq.m spa, with indoor and outdoor pools and a gym. There's also an excellent kids club, as well as multiple bars and restaurants. Fabulous.
  • Domaine des Clos offers characterful rooms, studios and self-catering apartments (the largest of which can sleep 7) in a converted 18th-century Provençal mas. Set 25kms outside Nîmes, it's a relaxed rural spot for couples, friends or families eager to enjoy yoga classes, strolling around 4 hectares of gardens, dips in the pool and restorative massages. Table d'hôtes dinners are a real treat for larger groups.
  • Hotel Cézanne boasts 55 cheerful contemporary rooms close to Aix's old town. Big family suites have space for extra beds, there's an appealing terrace restaurant and there are museums, cafés, shops and eateries just steps away. Good for exploring as a family.

For a Rural Escape

  • Le Mas d'Entremont sits in peaceful green gardens, slightly north of Aix's city centre. More like a collection of villas than a single hotel, the property has beamed living rooms with tiled floors, airy bedrooms, a tennis court, gym and large swimming pool. The restaurant serves fabulous local cuisine. A family-owned country hideaway.
  • Bien Loin d'Içi is a charming property just north of Nîmes. The three double bedrooms have contemporary interiors and private terraces with hot tubs. Enjoy big breakfasts before hopping on the B&B's bicycles to explore, or unwinding in the swimming pool surrounded by wildflowers. An intimate rural idyll.
  • Château d'Arpaillargues is a whimsical historic residence set in mature gardens outside Uzès. Pick this place for the fantastic restaurant, the range of activities — pool, bikes for hire, tennis court and boules lawn — as well as the airy, high-ceilinged interiors. Rural bliss for couples or families.
  • Le Clos des Eydins has five elegant bedrooms, one suite and two studios set in a historic house with landscaped gardens and a swimming pool near Bonnieux. Cosy up by the fireplace, chat to fellow guests over breakfast, and cook up a storm using fresh market produce in the shared kitchen after days of cycling or rural strolls. Children over 12 are welcome.
  • Les Florêts sits 15km south of Vaison-la-Romaine, tucked within the owners' vineyards and the surrounding forested hills. The 15 rooms are elegant, with views onto the gardens and the lavender fields beyond. There's a refreshing pool, too. Foodies will adore the courtyard restaurant, where dishes are paired with the hotel's own Gigondas wine. A family-run gem since 1960.

FOR A SIMPLE STAY

  • Hostellerie Provençale offers simple rooms with floral bedspreads and exposed stone walls in the centre of Uzès. The guesthouse is lovely and affordable, though the real draw is the restaurant. Famed for specialising in delicious dishes showcasing local produce, the kitchen is headed by two terrific Michelin-trained chefs. A delight.
  • Le Mas des Carrassins is a farmhouse-turned-B&B, surrounded by lavender and lemon trees; situated on the outskirts of St Remy, it feels appealingly rural and green. Spacious rooms — some with mezzanines — offer extra beds for little ones, and there's a great swimming pool, as well as an equestrian centre just around the corner. Laid-back and great value.
  • L’Atelier is a charming 16th-century residence in Villeneuve-les-Avignon, with stone walls, exposed beams and comfortable furnishings. Family-run, this chic little hotel has a peaceful garden and roof terrace, and wonderful buffet breakfasts. A great-value choice for couples or families.
