Search the best hotels in Amsterdam
Think of Amsterdam and you think first of history and heritage. You'll find some of the best places to stay in Amsterdam in neighbourhoods where houseboats bob at anchor on centuries-old canals where elegant 17th -century town houses rise above the water and spring tulips add splashes of vivid colour to window boxes, leafy parks and the serene courtyards of old almshouses. And, of course, you'll dream of discovering some of the world's greatest art collections in the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum.
But Amsterdam's more risqué reputation may come to mind too. It's hard to avoid sex, drugs and rock and roll. In narrow streets, 'coffee shops' - where marijuana is openly smoked - stand close to red-lit windows where sex workers advertise their services, and dance clubs serve every musical taste and gender identity.
The centuries-old culture of tolerance that today makes Amsterdam a haven for cannabis smokers, sex workers and a thriving LGBT+ community also fostered a Jewish community which left its stamp on the city with historic synagogues and the iconic Anne Frank House, preserved as a memorial to Dutch-Jewish victims of the Holocaust.
History aside, Amsterdam is a city where the 21st century makes its presence felt. Alongside the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum, new collections at Moco and NDSM celebrate adventurous contemporary street art and graffiti from all over the world, offering a lively contrast to the old masters.
Go to Amsterdam to soak up 17th-century 'Golden Age' architecture that has earned the historic centre UNESCO World Heritage status and marvel at the work of master painters like Rembrandt and Vermeer – but don't forget to also soak up some street life and explore lively new neighbourhoods beyond the Grachtengordel canal ring that surrounds the city's tourist-crowded heart.
The best hotels in Amsterdam are as varied as the city itself. The tall, narrow old townhouses around the Grachtengordel, built by wealthy merchants of the Golden Age, make gorgeous boutique hotels – but their architecture leaves little space for frills such as lounges, spas or even elevators. Look a little further afield, though, and you'll find some of the best places to stay in repurposed post-industrial buildings ranging from former newspaper and shipping company offices to one-time warehouses – and in these roomier spaces you can expect perks like pools, spas, Michelin-starred eateries and even in-house nightclubs.
You'll also find some of the best hotels in Amsterdam in outlying neighbourhoods like Oost and Oud West. Amsterdam's excellent tram and metro system brings them within easy reach of all the sights.
Where to Stay – which neighbourhood?
- Chances are you'll arrive in Amsterdam by way of through Centraal Station and Stationssplein, from which Damrak leads through Amsterdam Centrum to the Dam, the neighbourhood's focal square. Millions of visitors make a beeline for busy Centrum, so it's naturally home to hotels and hundreds of places to eat, drink, and shop. Centrum is within easy reach of the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House.
- Many of the best places to stay in Amsterdam are dotted around the Canal Belt (Grachtengordel). This is picture-postcard Amsterdam, where tall 17th century houses rise above curving waterways. You're close to the centre on these streets, just 10-20 minutes from Centraal Station.
- Negen Straatjes, about 1.2km from Centraal Station, is an ultra-chic enclave bordered by Amsterdam's three most venerable canals. Full of fab shops and galleries, it boasts a portfolio of to-die-for hideaway hotels.
- For a boho buzz and a whiff of tradition, stay in the Jordaan. This canalside neighbourhood west of Prinsengracht blends hipster bars and fashionable galleries with old-style taverns (almshouses). The Anne Frank House is nearby and Centraal Station is 1km away.
- Museumkwartier is the place to stay if great art at the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum tops your must-see list. Centraal Station is a 10-minute tram ride.
- Pick a hotel in Duivelseiland to be next to the Museumkwartier but away from the crowds. The Canal Belt begins a few blocks north and Centraal Station and the heritage attractions of Amsterdam Centrum are 10-20 minutes away by tram or metro.
- Looking for 'real Amsterdam' beyond the tourist hot spots? Dive into the streetlife and modernist architecture and authentic street life of De Pijp, where Albert Cuypstraat and its market are a street food paradise. Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum are within walking distance and Centraal Station is three metro stops away.
- Eye-catching architecture dominates the Eastern Docklands. This rejuvenated cultural hub is home to the Muziekgebouw concert hall and the Bimhuis jazz theatre, and is dotted with trendy spots to eat and drink. Centraal Station and Centrum are just a couple of tram stops away.
- Wide open spaces are at a premium in the city centre, so for urban greenery head to the gracious Vondelbuurt neighbourhood, around the charming Vondelpark. You'll find some of the best places to stay in Amsterdam here, just a few blocks from the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum. Centraal Station is a 10-minute tram ride.
- Don't stay in De Wallen and Oude Zijde if you're prudish. The city's legendary culture of tolerance finds full expression in the Rosse Buurt red light district's sex shops, porn parlours and bordellos. That said, the best hotels in De Wallen and Oude Zijde are a stone's throw from the Museum het Rembrandthuis, the Dam and the Royal Palace, there's mouthwatering Asian food on Zeedijk, and Centraal Station is only 750 metres away.
- The sights, shopping and dining of the city centre are within easy reach when you stay at one of the best hotels on the Waterfront. Attractions like the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum are a few tram stops away and Artis Zoo is within walking distance. Centraal Station is on your doorstep.
- The Jewish Quarter and Plantage are ideal neighbourhoods for visitors who want to immerse themselves in history and culture. Rembrandt lived here, in the heart of a thriving Jewish community that is celebrated at the Joods Historisch Museum. The national ballet and opera have their home at the Stopera complex, and the Artis Zoo is a fabulous family attraction. You're only one metro stop from Centraal Station.
- Amsterdam Noord is a magnet for fans of cinema, street art and nightlife. On the north shore of the IJ, it's dominated by the 20-storey A'DAM Toren, EYE Filmmuseum and NDSM, a hip cultural hub. Free ferries and a new metro line connect you with Amsterdam Centraal Station and downtown Amsterdam in minutes.
- Westerpark is a lively cultural hub surrounding a delightful urban green space and a new complex of music, performance and exhibition spaces. Great for street food and open air activities too. An easy walk to the shops and restaurants of the Jordaan, and two tram stops from Centraal Station.
What not to Miss

Amsterdam is at its best in spring (when the famous tulips are in flower) and summer. The warmest months are June to September, when temperatures are around 20-22C. This is also Amsterdam's busiest season. From November to March temperatures are rarely higher than 5C and may drop below freezing. Rain is possible all year round. Hotel rooms sell out quickly around the dates of popular events like Konigsdag (April 27), when Amsterdam celebrates the King's birthday with a giant street party, and during the huge Pride Amsterdam celebrations in late July/early August, but Amsterdam is a very busy city all year round, so booking ahead is essential if you want the right hotel at the right price.
International visitors can fly into Amsterdam Schiphol International Airport, (15km/ 9.5 miles west of the city). From the airport, you can either take the bus (around 30 minutes) or train (15-20 minutes) into the centre of town.
High speed international trains connect Amsterdam with other major cities across mainland Europe. Eurostar trains run between London and Amsterdam Centraal Station via Brussels.
